News and Veiws from Circle A Garden

Posted 3/22/2012 5:41pm by Betsy Austin.

Happy spring everyone!!

Here we are just past spring equinox and except for a slight cool down early in the week it has been glorious!!  I did get about 2 hours of that nice gentle rain I wanted on Sunday...then it turned to snow. We didn't get much down here in the valley..just a few light snow showers off and on through Tuesday morning. Now the sun is back and it is warming up again. Hopefully our mountains got a good bit of snow.. We are still a bit on the dry side.
Everything in the high tunnel is looking great. I think everything just about doubled in size despite the cold. We planted another planting of turnips, radishes, salad greens, and arugula..also planted peas in the low tunnel..hopefully we are past any really cold spells this year..I seem to remember 18 degrees and snow mid April last season, though. Time will tell!! This week we will be transplanting another batch of lettuces and bitter green. And weeding a bit more and watering a lot!!
NOTE: we need about 200 gallon plastic milk jugs to help keep the tomatoes, cucs, etc warm in the high tunnel..please let us recycle them for you!!

In the prop house things are growing well. Earlier in the week there was not any room left!! Now that it has warmed back up I am in the process of fertilizing and kicking out some of the early cool season crops to the hardening off bench..onions, shallots, kohlrabi, and cabbages..guess what we are doing this coming week!! Planting onions!!

Outdoors things continue to come up..Most things were not affected by the cold temps except maybe the apricots. Some of the blossoms were already opening on Saturday..I checked them today and the remaining buds look ok..it will take a couple more days before we can tell if more of the buds were damaged. The bees seem to think the buds are ok..they are out there buzzing around going  open open open!!

Ela Fruit Share..
The past couple of years we have been offering a fruit share from Ela Family Farm. Steve grows a goodly variety of certified organic peaches, pears, apples and plums. It is a bit early in the season to know exactly what fruit will be in the fruit share..we need to wait and see what mother nature does to the fruit on both farms to know what we can both offer. BUT we need to do a bit of basic planning so I need to know how many folks are interested in the fruit share again this season. please let me know in the next couple of weeks so I can let Steve know for sure if we are going to offer it again this season..thanks   They are also having a farm tour Sunday, May 6th at 10:00 am. I have toured their farm and it is amazing!! I would love to see it agian..let me know if you are interested and we can get a car pool going!!

Now is the time to sign up for the CSA!!

We start the season with lots of green leafies {chard, kale, mustards, orach, bok choi, arugula, spinach, salad greens..to name a few}, beets, carrots, spring radishes, scallions, green garlic, salad turnips and more. As the season progresses you will find peas, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, green beans, tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, artichokes, summer squash, potatoes, onions, melons, winter squash, sweet potatoes, celeriac, dry beans, sunchokes and much more. {check out our list of veggies and about the time they are in season on our website}. 2012 will be our 7th year for our CSA. We are excited and looking forward to growing for you!! Please visit our website  www.circleagarden.com  for more information or to sign up. if you have any questions or would like a tour of the farm please contact us. If you need a partner to share with or are looking for a pickup group please let me know so I can add it to the newsletter.
Note: when you sign up for the CSA please make sure you are signing up under MEMBERSHIP signup rather than mailing list sign up!! I did add a new widget to make it easier to find..look on the left hand side the screen when you go nto the website..Mailing list sign up is at the top..Membership actions is on the bottom..You can also check out your balance from here as well.

NOTES: Mellisa..Gail needs to know if you are still wanting to share this season!! Please let me know ASAP!!
We have three members in Telluride looking for more members from that area to share pickups.

Also have two members in Ouray looking for more folks to share pickup.

Also have a group forming from the Crested Butte/Gunnison way who are looking for more members to share pickups

Note: I am planning on doing a tour of the farm Saturday April 7 {first veggie pickup} If you would like a tour before then, please let me know..we would love to show you around!!

New and Fun Happenings.. The Chicks finally are here!! They arrived yesterday morning at the crack of dawn!! They are sooooo cute..look like little fuzz balls right now!! I have already caught Mom and Della spoiling them!!  {I just haven't mentioned the time I have spent with them early of a morning before it gets light!!}
We are also thinking of growing a few turkeys again this year for our holiday feasts. Last season several of you asked about getting a turkey. We would like to know how many folks would be interested in having us grow one for you. We will probably ask for a downpayment to help cover the initial cost of the poults and then figure out a per pound price depending on our feed and labour costs. {also we will be asking you to help with harvesting of your holiday bird in November!!}

More Fun happenings.. Check out Valley Food Partnership    www.valleyfoodpartnership.org
A local community organization dedicated to connecting local farms to local forks.
Look for recipes from VFP in your DMEA newsletter starting in March!!

Workdays for  March 2012
We will be doing Saturday workdays until veggie pickup starts in April.
March workdays will be the 24th, and 31st Depending on March weather projects  may be working out doors pruning trees and shrubs, getting ready to plant alliums, peas, and cabbages and getting the sunchoke bed ready for the season.
Time: 10:00 or so until about 1:00
Please let me know if you can make it.
Any and all help will be greatly appreciated!! Our March intern will not be able to come until May so we will be struggling just a bit to get through the next weeks.
