CSA veggie pickup reminder

Posted 4/3/2014 7:00pm by Betsy Austin.

Happy spring?? everyone!!

Note: first veggie pickup of the season is this Saturday, April 5..just two days from today!! Please take a few minutes to sign up if you haven't already!!

The weather this week has been a bit unsettled..cooler highs ranging from high 60's over the weekend..40's and 50's the last couple of days. Lows have been all over the map..20 to 40 depending on how much cloud cover we had overnight. Lots of wind, but very little moisture until this morning..we started the day out with about an inch of snow. It is all melted off now. It is supposed to be cold again tonight but warming into the 50's for tomorrow. Looks like Saturday could be cloudy and nasty at least part of the day..we are hoping for sun in the morning for veggie pickup and a nice gentle rain in the afternoon.

The prophouse is pretty empty right now..I kicked a bunch more stuff out to the honey house. It is starting to fill up again though..have been pricking up broccoli, peppers, and eggplant. Started late cauliflower and kohlrabies, and a few other odds and ends. Fun and exciting..we now have 6 little gingers coming up!!

In the tunnel..Mom has been keeping up with most of the weeds..she takes them in to feed to the baby chicks. This week we mostly just weeded, watered, and admired.{or we could have been licking our chops!!}

Outdoors things are happening fast. The peas and the favas are coming up. The apricots were pretty much in full bloom on the weekend..then it got cold and they look to be toast!! The litle sand cherries are now blooming..and will probably freeze tonight. The willows are leafing out..the rhubarb is getting taller..the garlic is doing well..the poppies are coming up as well as some of the other perennial herbs and flowers. We got the first 2000 onions planted. And we are almost done getting the veggie shed ready for action..just need to try out our layout and see if it is going to work the way we hope..will probably have to do some tweaking before we are done.

Updates on our little birdie friends. Well the geese are ready to lay, but not quite ready to set..they are still thinking about it. Soooo, some critter raided the nest and ate the eggs...The geesies are NOT happy about it!! Della thinks that as soon as the geese are ready to set and stay on the nest at night the critter problem will go away some.  Bandit is starting to look better..more feathers..less winter underwear sticking out..still has the big feet, wart on his nose, and the mohawk!! Della says that Kiera{the much smaller,prettier, feminine version of Bandit} is sitting on her lap now to eat her meal worm treats..I don't know..Do we really need a lap duck? Baby chickies will be 4 weeks old on Monday..they are growing rapidly and getting feathers. Mom has been "picking" them choice little bit of green stuff as she weeds in the high tunnel. I think they are mostly playing with the weeds at this point..for some reason their "mommies" just are having a hard time showing them how to eat them!!

note: we do have chicken and duck eggs for sale here at the farm..chicken eggs are $4.00 and Duck eggs are $6.00. Just give us a call..249-9725..to pick some
