CSA veggie pickup reminder

Posted 4/10/2014 6:46pm by Betsy Austin.

Happy spring again everyone!!

Note: second veggie pickup of the season is this Saturday, April 12..9:00 am tp noon.  Please take a few minutes to sign up if you haven't already!!

The weather this week was much nicer. I even got my nice gentle rain shower..not all night, but a good 3 or 4 hours of it. It was a little chilly early in the week, but has warmed up nicely..high in the high 60 to low 70 degree range..lows early in the week in the high 20's last night it was 42. The wind has been pretty mellow this week..more a nice breeze than a gale!!

The prophouse is rapidly filling back up. Pricked up early cauliflower, and the rest of the peppers, eggplant, and something else that I can't remember. Started okra and cucumbers for the high tunnel. Next week I should have late cabbages, more lettuces, more tomatoes and peppers ready to prick up.  Fun and exciting..we now have 11 little gingers coming up!!

In the tunnel..Greens are starting to get scary!! They are VERY happy and growing well. Carrots are coming along..looks like we may have the first of them next week!! Radishes are growing slow..I was worried that the first batch of french breakfast were going to bolt before the veggie pickup started..not sure why but they are just barely getting ready..have a few this week. Beets are starting to get little beets..we'll be thinning them the next weeks.

Outdoors things are looking up!! The apricots we thought were toast on Saturday started having more buds open and were nice and white in places by Monday. {Saturday most all the blossoms were pretty brown and frosted looking}. We don;t know yet if the cold nights last week damaged the buds that are opening this week but it is looking a bit more promising for cots so far. So far the lilac buds are growing and getting fatter..they haven't bloomed well for a few years..the buds got frozen and no pretty blooms. The plum buds are starting to swell..the willows are blooming,  the daffodils are blooming, garlic is lookin' good..so is the rhubarb. The peas, favas, and onions are doing well. And this week we got early cabbages and kohlrabi planted.

Updates on our little birdie friends. On the goose front..Babble {Miss Piggy's mate} is setting now..I think Della says she has 7 eggs. I think it takes goose eggs 28 days to hatch. Duckies are all doing well.. Baby chickies will be 5 weeks old on Monday..they are now living in the pen under the apricot tree..they are enjoying the extra space. And guess what..Mom and Della went to Murdocks on their own again and brought home ten more baby chicks!! They will be about  2 weeks old on Tuesday. They are so tiny compared to their loder siblings!!

note: we do have chicken and duck eggs for sale here at the farm..chicken eggs are $4.00 and Duck eggs are $6.00. Just give us a call..249-9725..to pick some
