CSA veggie pickup reminder

Posted 4/18/2014 6:27pm by Betsy Austin.

Welcome to springtime in the Rockies!!!

Note: third veggie pickup of the season is this Saturday, April 12..9:00 am tp noon.  Please take a few minutes to sign up if you haven't already!!

The weather this week started out not so happy..Saturday was pretty nice for veggie pickup in the morning, but the wind picked up and the clouds rolled in in the afternoon. We had wind, thunder, a little more wind and not much rain in the evening. When I went out Sunday morning it was cloudy and 40 degrees..I did a few things in the prop house, then planted a tray of parsley..by 10 the temperature had dropped and it was snowing!! Snowed and rained off and on a good bit of the day..then cleared off overnight and got really cold..we were 22 degrees both Sunday and Monday nights. Nice and sunny and warming up some on Tuesday. Wednesday was cloudy, but warm..we kept expecting it to rain any minute but nothing happened. This morning it was 38 when we started out and got almost to 80 before the clouds rolled back in this afternoon.

This was a good week for catching up in the prop-house..I had a lot of things that were not quite ready to prick-up last week but were desperate for more room this week. Pricked up late cabbages, lettuces, tomatoes, peppers, basil, marigolds, and I'm sure I am forgetting somebody. Started more lettuces and got trays ready to seed the next batch of greens. Okra and cucumbers are already coming up..can't believe it is almost time to start summer squash!!

In the tunnel..starting to get some blank spaces in the greens plantings.. as the greens come out we will be getting those beds ready for all those warm season goodies in the prop house. Was going to start planting tomatoes and ginger until it got so cold. I think they would have been alright all tucked in under the remay with their jugs of water, but just wasn't quite brave enough to risk my babies!!

Outdoors..well things were looking up until Sunday night!! You know those apricots we thought were looking so much better Saturday..well they are looking pretty sad..not sure if we will have more than a handful of cots again this year. Rhubarb got pretty frozen..it was looking like we could start picking it this week..well it needs to grow out a week or so. Not sure on the lilacs.. we were all jazzed thinking we would have lots of blooms..we'll just have to wait and see. The plums were maybe 1/4 bloomed out, but are blooming nicely again now. Apples and pear are starting to leaf out a bit. Garlic is growing well. The cabbages, kohlrabi, onions, peas, and favas came through the freeze with flying colors..they are looking very good. hopefully this next week we can get greens, lettuces, more onions and some of the potatoes in.

Updates on our little birdie friends. On the goose front..Babble {Miss Piggy's mate} will have been setting 14 days on Saturday..halfway there!! Coral has a nest now but hasn't gotten real serious about staying on the next..she's just thing about it for now. Duckies are all doing well.. Baby chickies will be 6 weeks old on Monday..they are now living in the pen under the apricot tree..they are enjoying the extra space.  The new babies will be about  3 weeks old on Tuesday. We keep promising they will get to go out and play with the older chikies, but the weather hasn't cooperated.

note: we do have chicken and duck eggs for sale here at the farm..chicken eggs are $4.00 and Duck eggs are $6.00. Just give us a call..249-9725..to pick some
