CSA veggie pickup reminder

Posted 4/24/2014 9:21pm by Betsy Austin.

Welcome to springtime in the Rockies!!!

Note: fourth veggie pickup of the season is this Saturday, April 12..9:00 am tp noon.  Please take a few minutes to sign up if you haven't already!!

The week started out with clouds and a nice rain on Saturday..Sunday was an almost perfect day..lots of sun, a few happy little clouds..just right for a potluck Easter dinner with our farmer friends. Monday and Tuesday were sunny and VERY warm..I think we reached 80. Wednesday was cloudy and chilly. Overnight low was down to 22 degrees again. Today was sunny, but a bit of chill in the air. And it looks like we have another storm coming through just in time for the weekend!! We have our request in for more snow in the mountains and a few of those gentle soaking rains hear on the farm. Murphy's law say that we will get snow because we went ahead on got the shade cloth up on the veggie shed this week!!.

It seems like I am barely holding my own in the prop house..I get to thinkin' I am all caught up but look again and something has grown much bigger than it was just a bit ago!! Pricked up a bunch more stuff but still have several seed flats that are now ready. Started tomatillos and got trays ready for celeriac, malabar spinach and out door cucs

In the tunnel..Planted ginger on Monday..I asked Della which we should start with..she voted for ginger..wanted to get the tomatoes in, but chickened out.. so glad I did it was much colder last night than we anticipated. Ginger did well though..we tucked it in with extra remay so that it wouldn't get cold.

Outdoors..Well we got the greens and the lettuces in..so far they look ok after their  cold night. the plums and one apple tree were in full bloom..Della says they look alright, but they may have gotten damages. We keep trying to get the drip up and running but just about the time we decide it's warm enough we get another night in the low 20's.{all the valves that control the water flow will freeze even with protection}. Though we were going to have rubarb this week, but may have to let it grow out of this freeze now. Peas, favas, onions, cabbages, and kohlrabi are still looking pretty good..the cold night may have set them back just a bit though.

Updates on our little birdie friends. On the goose front..Babble {Miss Piggy's mate} will have been setting 21 days on Saturday..one week to go!! Coral has a nest now but hasn't gotten real serious about staying on the next..she's just thing about it for now. Duckies are all doing well.. Baby chickies will be 7 weeks old on Monday..they are now living in the pen under the apricot tree..they are enjoying the extra space.  The new babies will be about  4 weeks old on Tuesday. They finally got to go out this week. Della put them in with their slightly older siblings..they've been a bit amusing..at first they were scared of each other. The dog..you know the predator.. howling,  doesn't faze them, but another chick? Today Della says they are co-existing..sharing space, food, water..just tolerating each other.

note: we do have chicken and duck eggs for sale here at the farm..chicken eggs are $4.00 and Duck eggs are $6.00. Just give us a call..249-9725..to pick some
