CSA veggie pickup reminder

Posted 5/2/2014 6:16pm by Betsy Austin.

Happy May!!

Note: fifth veggie pickup of the season is this Saturday, May 3..9:00 am tp noon.  Please take a few minutes to sign up if you haven't already!!

Well, the last week of April was changeable to say the least..the weather didn't seem to know just what it wanted to do!! The weekend was wet and miserable..I think more miserable than wet..did get some moisture here on the farm, but not my gentle overnight rain I requested!! Monday was sunny some, cloudy some, windy some, snowy some, rainy some. Della and I were planting tomatoes in the high tunnel..we'd get too warm and open the doors, then we'd be too cold and shut them..about every 20 minutes or so. Tuesday was cloudy and chilly most of the day..Wed was sunny in the morning then clouded over and had a few flakes of snow coming down. Our highs for the last week of April ranged from mid-40 to high 50..our lows mid 30 except Tuesday and Wednesday when they were 22 and 20..brrr. The first two days of May have been a very welcome change!! Sunny with a few clouds, a bit breezy off and on and highs in the 70's. Looks like we may have much more sun and warm weather for a few days..but it is still springtime in the Rockies and this is Colorado!!

In the prop house..things just keep on a growin'!! Okra is getting it's 2nd set of true leaves..cucs for the tunnel are ready to transplant..hope the warmer weather holds so I can get them in the ground before they have cucumbers!! Almost got caught up pricking stuff up..then I looked at the tray of lettuces this morning!! I think they are twice as big as they were Wednesday.

In the tunnel..Ginger is looking good..starting to see new sprouts coming up..Planted the tomats and they are looking great!! No tomatoes yet, though!! Favas are blooming..really blooming!! Got then staked up so they hopefully won't eat the tomats. More and more bare spaces..soon to be filled with peppers, eggplant, cucumbers, okra, malabar spinach, and more!! Sweet potato slips got here yesterday..guess what I will be doing Sunday Morning!!

Outdoors..Every time we plant something it gets cold again!! This week it was more onions and we seeded salad greens, radishes, and turnips. What we have in seems to be doing well dispite the cold nights..I think they have been set back a week or so though..they just don't grow as fast in the cold. We may have a bit of a gap between our high tunnel greens and our outdoor plantings. I was hoping for kohlrabi and cabbages early to mid June..they are growing, but very slowly..they may surprise me. Peas are doing well and may be ready by late May. We will just have to see how our May weather shapes up. I think the plums may be toast..they were looking ok last week, but don't look so happy this week. Some of the apples may be ok..they are still looking pretty good. We are ever hopeful we can get the drip turned on this week. We have been watering with the overhead sprinkler and are so looking forward to not moving hoses all over the place!!

Updates on our little birdie friends. On the goose front..Babble {Miss Piggy's mate} will have been setting 28 days on Saturday..b-day for little goosies!!!!  Coral is still thinking about setting on her nest. Della discovered that her geese are afraid of water..just like their mommy!! She's been letting them into the riverbottom the last couple of days{we have a pond out there} And just like Della they wade out until their feet don't touch bottom and chicken out!! Duckies are all doing well.. One of the cayugas is starting to set. I think she has something like 25 days to go!! Baby chickies will be 8 weeks old on Monday..they are now living in the pen under the apricot tree..they are enjoying the extra space.  The new babies will be about  5 weeks old on Tuesday.

note: we do have chicken and duck eggs for sale here at the farm..chicken eggs are $4.00 and Duck eggs are $6.00. Just give us a call..249-9725..to pick some
