Posted 6/19/2014 7:48pm by Betsy Austin.

Happy Solstice!!

Note: 12th veggie pickup of the season is this Saturday, June 14..9:00 am to noon. 25 more weeks of fresh awesome deliciousness !! shares will be prorated after June 1st. Please take a few minutes to sign up if you haven't already!!

Note: time for a payment if you haven't done it already!! Thanks!!

Special Note!! We need your help!! The end is in sight!! Please come out and help us finish  planting..Sunday June 22..I will be out there at 6 am when it is cool..would like to be done before noon when it is way hot!! This will be the last Sunday workday until fall..your farmers need to start taking a day off!!

!!!!!Special, special note: Once again we are working with Ela Family Farms in Hotchkiss to bring you the option of a fruit share. This year we will be able to offer a nine week fruit share with peaches, pears, and apples{in their season}{about 58 lbs of fruit total}. The cost is $150. Ela,s is requesting that we have at least 20 shares to make it worth their time and effort to deliver it to us each week. I need to know before July 4th if you are interested..I need payment before July 10th. Please read the information from Ela's at the end of this update. Thanks..well..for some reason I can't get it to work so I will have the information posted at Saturday pickup

Solstice is upon us!! Next week the days will be getting shorter..not..we will just have a little less daylight to in which to get everything done!!                                                         The weather this week has been WINDY!! Once again anything that wasn't nailed down is long gone. Temperatures were just a bit cooler..mostly 70-80 during the day and mostly high 40's at night..we did have one night that was 38 though..just a wee tad cold for June!! A few clouds off and on..or maybe it was just the brown cloud of dust blowing in!! Our good freind Mindy dropped by this afternoon to drop off a loaf of fresh baked bread..she was in Telluride yesterday in the middle of a snow storm!!

In the tunnels..Favas have been a bit more restrained this week..only picked about 30 lbs!! Tomatoes are getting bigger..vines and those first little tomatoes. Peppers are starting to set little tiny peppers..bush cucs are starting to get their first little girl blossoms..the viney ones are starting to run..eggplant is just starting to bloom.

Outdoors..Planting frenzy continues..hopefully Sunday and Monday will see the last of the warm season goodies in the ground. {the wind slowed us down this week}..Please consider coming out and giving us a hand!!                                                                                         Sunday was ladies day at the farm!! Thank you Bettye, Sonja, Claire, and Phoebe for joining us. We planted the rest of the okra, part of the winter squash, tomatoes, peppers and eggplant..and a patch of zinnias for Claire!!

Peas are slowing down already..looks like this week is pretty much the last of the sugar snaps..and the early variety of english peas. We may have the first cabbages next week..if Della and I don't wear them out checking them..they look ready but when we give them a little squeeze they are not quite there. Salad turnips may also be back soon..they are about the size of my thumb this week. Potatoes are just barely  starting to bloom.
Garlic is coming along nicely..just a few more weeks before we can harvest those first juicy bulbs!!

Our thanks to Bettye, Sonja, Claire, Phoebe, Geoff, and Transition Lab for helping us out this week!!

Updates on our little birdie friends. Della has checked her calendar and is thinking Coral may be about ready to hatch..well she hasn't yet..Della went out and asked her if she could hurry it up so that Phoebe could see the goslings before she left..nothing doing!!

Duckies are all doing well.. Della's 3 setting ladies are hanging in there!!

Baby chickies will be 15 weeks old on Monday.. The new babies will be about  12 weeks old on Tuesday. Della is getting a new home ready for them..we have a pen down in the plum thicket that is the next step for our new ladies..they will be able to get aquainted with the older chickens without actually being in the same pen. By fall they should be comfortable with each other so they can go into the chicken house for the winter.

note: we do have chicken and duck eggs for sale here at the farm..chicken eggs are $4.00 and Duck eggs are $6.00. Just give us a call..249-9725..to pick some

work days last Sunday workday until fall is Sunday June 22..we can set up times during the week for you during the summer..Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday work best for us..anytime 6 am to noon.

Please help us if you can..our intern search is not going well..so far we have managed with the help of Transition Lab, good friends and Csa members..but it is June and time for planting frenzy!! Any help on Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday would be greatly appreciated!! { I start about 6 and go until I just can't go any longer}

We still have a few shares available..of special note..I have a gentleman who would like to purchase a share for a family in need..so please touch base with me Saturday if you can help us out.

What is available for the CSA?

This is my best guess of what we will be harvesting this week.

NOTE:For food safety..our veggies are not ready to eat..we "chill" or hydro-cool them to get the field heat out but they are not washed!! Please wash them before you eat them!!
