Posted 7/18/2014 5:53pm by Betsy Austin.

Happy July!!

!!!!!Note..need payment for Ela fruit share!! Also have a couple extra shares available!!

Weather this week has been mostly HOT!! and muggy part of the time. Highs in the high 80 to low 90 range..lows right about 60 most of the week. A bit cooler on Wednesday morning when we had several nice rain showers. They didn't last long, but sure made the air smell nice and clean!!

In the tunnels..finished fertilizing and mulching the chard, kale, and collards this week..the chard is especially appreciative!!  Did some more trellising of tomatoes and cucs. Both the tomatoes and cucs tripled their yield this week..harvested 18 lbs of cucs and 3 lbs of tomats..many more to come!! We harvested the first peppers and eggplant this week..Patrick's Purple Pepper is now Patrick's Perfect Purple Pepper..it is beautiful!! Just have to find a great phrase for Bettye's okra and Kat's eggplant..

Outdoors..Did our third squash bug hunt of the season Tuesday..found over 40 adults, lots of egg clusters and a few nymphs..they must have been asleep and hiding out last week!! Thanks Diann for you help!! Weeding frenzy continues..have one section and most of the second one completed..we are making progress!! Harvested the next 2 varieties of garlic...And did I mention all the weeds we pulled?

Thank you, thank you, thank you to all who have come out to help us during our time of need..Transition Lab, Tomten Farm, Buckhorn Gardens; Geoff, Claire, Pheobe and all our wonderful volunteers; AND all our CSA members who heard our call. Words cannot describe how very fortunate and blessed we feel to have such a wonderful group of folks in our farm's family and community.

Updates on our little birdie friends..Coral's babies were 3 weeks old on Monday. They are growing at an astonishing rate..remind me of summer squash!!. Mom's babies..are almost 3 weeks old today and tomorrow..Coral has adopted one, one of the other mammas has adopted one, and Miss Piggy{one of the ganders} has adopted the other 3.

Duckies are all doing well.. nothing is hatching so Della is going to see if Kiera is up to setting another 35 days.

Baby chickies will be 19 weeks old on Monday.. The new babies will be about  16 weeks old on Tuesday.

note: we do have chicken and duck eggs for sale here at the farm..chicken eggs are $4.00 and Duck eggs are $6.00. Just give us a call..249-9725..to pick some

work days we can set up time for you to get your work commitment in during the week..Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday work best for us..anytime from 6am to noon. We will have Sunday workdays again in the fall after the frost.

We still have a few shares available..of special note..I have a gentleman who would like to purchase a share for a family in need..so please touch base with me Saturday if you can help us out.

What is available for the CSA?

This is my best guess of what we will be harvesting this week. The next couple of weeks the shares may be a bit light..we are transitioning from cool season crops to warm season goodies

NOTE:For food safety..our veggies are not ready to eat..we "chill" or hydro-cool them to get the field heat out but they are not washed!! Please wash them before you eat them!!

From the tunnel

Swiss chard

cucumbers..just a few more

tomatoes..just a few

okra..just a tad

pepper and eggplant..about 4 of each

From outdoors

kohlrabi..last until fall crop is ready

cabbage..many more

summer squash

and more herbs

Fun happening.. Jen McGruther..one of your fellow CSA members has written a cookbook..Nourished Kitchen..it is awesome..great pictures..tasty recipes..I will try to remember to bring our copy out for you all to look at it!!

Looking forward to seeing you on Saturday!!
