CSA veggie pickup reminder

Posted 8/1/2014 6:40pm by Betsy Austin.

Happy Monsoon!!

Well, I think our monsoons have kicked in this week..several nice gentle overnight soaking rains as well as some heavier afternoon downpours that didn't last long. Plants {as well as people} are just lovin' it!! Temperatures have been just a wee bit cooler..mostly mid to high 80's with night time lows in the high 50 to low 60's. A bit muggy off and on..but then a breeze picks up and a happy little cloud will come over the sun and makes it very bearable.

In the tunnels..wish I could say harvests in the tunnels are peaking..but no such luck{except for the chard!!}. The plants are growing very well..the peppers, eggplant, and tomatoes are setting lots of fruit..they just are taking their sweet time to ripen. We have been expecting tomatoes in the low tunnel to really kick in any time the last 3 weeks..they are SO loaded with green fruit..once they start..watch out!! Cucumbers and okra are coming along and producing just a bit more each week. The sweet potatoes in the low tunnel are growing madly..they are starting to take over the entire bed and then some!!

Outdoors..everything just loved the rain this week..we could see the plants just stretch out and shout thank you!! Last week when we were picking basil I could look over at the melon patch and see space between the plants..not this week!! {some of them have baseball sized fruit now!!} The winter squash has pretty much filled it's area as well. Picked the first couple outdoor cucs and the first of the artichokes..the beans are blooming. I think the celery is twice as big this week as last. Just a few short weeks ago we had very nice paths in between the beds..well, they are disappearing rapidly!! The garlic is almost all harvested and hung..just have a bit of elephant garlic left{we bugged out when it started thundering and lightening and spitting rain!!} We have also pulled a gazzillion more weeds, done squash bug hunts, tomato hornworm hunts and seeded beds with more salad turnips, salad greens, beets, and carrots for the fall. Thanks Diane and Sonia for your help!!

Updates on our little birdie friends..Coral's babies were 5 weeks old on Monday. They are growing at an astonishing rate..remind me of summer squash!!. Mom's babies..are almost 5 weeks old today and tomorrow. We have lost 2 goslings to preditors so we moved them to the pen under the apricot tree today where hopefully they will be safer..they are old enough to not need to be brooded..they don't fit under their parents anymore!!

Duckies are all doing well..they really enjoyed the rains!! Della gave both Kiera and Titus new eggs last week so we will see what happens

Baby chickies will be 21 weeks old on Monday.. The new babies will be about  18 weeks old on Tuesday. Della moved them into the chicken house with the older chickens. AND they are starting to lay!! I had forgotten just how small pullet eggs are!!

note: we do have chicken and duck eggs for sale here at the farm..chicken eggs are $4.00 and Duck eggs are $6.00. Just give us a call..249-9725..to pick some

work days we can set up time for you to get your work commitment in during the week..Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday work best for us..anytime from 6am to noon. We will have Sunday workdays again in the fall after the frost.

We still have a few shares available..

What is available for the CSA?

This is my best guess of what we will be harvesting this week. The next couple of weeks the shares may be a bit light..we are transitioning from cool season crops to warm season goodies..we are getting a few more pounds of warm season delights each week but are not there yet!!

NOTE:For food safety..our veggies are not ready to eat..we "chill" or hydro-cool them to get the field heat out but they are not washed!! Please wash them before you eat them!!
