Happy Winter??

Note:correction on workdays..Every SATURDAY instead of Sunday 9:00-noon!!

well, we are still saying "what winter". Much of last week I was running around outdoors in shorts and t-shirt..we had a day or two that our highs got up into the 70's..nights didn't get below about 30. I'm ok with the shorts and t-shirt thing while working in the high tunnel in early Febuary, but it is a bit disconcerting for outdoors!! Our little bit of a storm on Sunday and Monday gave us about 10 whole drops of rain and much cooler temps..I think our high was about 45..our lows were down into the low 20's. The last couple of days have been warm and sunny in the 60's but the nights have still been low 20's. Looks like that could change over the weekend. Winter storm watch out Friday night and Saturday for up around Crested Butte..above 8,000 ft. Forecast looks like we might get a good storm in "our mountains"{San Juans} by Sunday. I'm not going to hold my breath though..this is only Thursday..it is Colorado..and the weather will probably change by the weekend!! I did put in my request for that nice gentle overnight rain once a week for the rest of the season..not holding my breath on that one either!!

Putting the last touches on the garden plan..still have a couple of things to squeeze in...haven't even started planting and I am already out of room. Still have a couple more seed orders to put in..I think I am about done and someone brings me another catalog with cool stuff that I would like to try!! Some of the new things we have found so far are some new greens, 4 new winter squash, a couple of tomatoes, and a couple more purple peppers. The greens; 3 kales..2 crinkly red ones and a frilly mix with white and purple stems and viens{I think it is one that Alex had found late last year}..also a leaf broccoli, a Portuguese kale, and one called Amira which I have had before when I was in Texas.{hoping it will be a nice one that will do well in the summer}.

Pruning is coming along..we had a pruning part Saturday..Our thanks to our farmer friends who came to help us out..George, Alyssia, and their friend from Blue Grama Farm and  Laura from High Desert Seed and Farm{not sure that name is final, yet}. It was another of those bright shiny days with abundant sunshine and good company!! More signs of spring..the maples are in full bloom..the willows are just about ready to leaf..a few more bulbs are poking up...all the birds..our flocks as well as the wild ones think it's spring!!

Things in the prop house are growing well..kicked the first succession of greens out to the tunnel to make room for the next batch. Have another batch of lettuces ready to prick up..celery and artichokes are up and happy..and started the early cabbage and kohlrabi{I said broccoli last time but meant kohlrabi!!}

The high tunnel is rapidly filling up..seeded beets, carrots, salad turnips, beta greens and favas this last week. Transplanted kales, mustards, orach, mibuna, mizuna, bok choi, red rain, leaf broccoli and more. Next week will be chard{it just wasn't quite big enough to transplant} and the first lettuces.

 We are about 6 weeks out from our first veggie pickup of the season. {first Saturday in April!!}. Time to sign up for another season of awesome fresh veggies!! We need 50 members this season!! We are not quite halfway to our goal this second week of February.THANK YOU to those of you who have been kind to your farmers and already signed up. Sorry to say but our veggies don't just happen..it takes about 10 weeks for those first spring greens and cool season roots to grow big enough to harvest.It helps so much with starting our successions of greens to know a head of time just how many folks we need to grow for.

  Please sign up and encourage friends, family, co-workers, etc to join us!! To sign up..just go to our website.. www.circleagarden.com  click on member signup and follow the directions.

Not sure if our CSA is for you?  Have questions on how it works? Would you like to schedule a tour and talk to your farmer face to face? Please, don't hesitate to contact us through the website or by phone. {be aware that we are spending much of our daylight hours outdoors away from the phone..Please leave a message and we will be glad to get back to you in the evening!!}

Workdays for February and March..every Saturday 9:00 am to noon. If the weather is lousy we will work in the tunnels..if it continues like it has we will be outdoors enjoying the sunshine. Please let me know when you will be out!! These will be the only Sunday work days of the season. Can't come on Sunday, but have other days that work better for you?? We are very flexible, just call or shoot us an e-mail to set up an alternative time!!
