Happy Springtime in the Rockies!!

Note: first veggie pickup of the 2015 season is next Saturday April 4th 9:00am to noon!!!

Spring weather has been very nice most of the time. I did get my nice gentle rain a little over a week ago..so it was pretty much all day and a good bit of the night, but at least this time it was NOT 2 feet of snow!! Had another little rain with cold winds last Wednesday..our high that day was barely above 40..our low that night was 18. The  rest of the time our highs have been mostly in the high 60-low 70 with nighttime temps mostly in the low 30-40 degree range. Very mild so far this spring!!

Outdoors things are happening!! Not too much planting yet but we finally were able to get the area for the peas tilled..still have some tweaking to do..have a few places that are VERY compacted that we will need to broad fork enough for water and roots to penetrate. It is not as bad as I figured it would be..phew!! Trellises are being worked on right now so hopefully we can start getting some pea planting done tomorrow!! Our new rhubarbs are looking great..they look so much smaller than the older plants but are rooting nicely before they start putting out a lot leaves. The apricots were blooming nicely when we had that cold night last week..some of the blossoms are definitely toast..all brown and ugly..many of the others are looking ok so maybe? this year we will have Apricots?  A few of the plums were blooming as well..mostly the wild plum and whatever that other variety is we planted some years ago{Della just told me what it was AGAIN and it is gone already!!} The bulk of our plums{the ones that have been here since before we came} are budding and showing color but seem ok so far. The apples and quince have buds that are swelling rapidly. The lilac may have gotten hit again..it has buds that have been swelling rapidly..the past few years they get to this point..get frozen..and a couple weeks later the buds start falling off. Della and I will be watching it 'cause we have really missed the lilac blooming!! Garlic is looking great..growing nicely. Our Thanks to Laura for coming out with her tiller and to our Jeff and Randy for getting our trellises back together!!

Prop house is starting to fill back up again. Got all the tunnel tomatoes pricked up and some of the strange little herbie things. {2 seed flats turned into something like 10 trays of plants!!} Peppers, eggplant, broccoli, cauliflower and lettuces are not quite ready..celeriac is taking its sweet time germinating..it can take 3 weeks or more to come up. started more herbs..basil, marjoram, summer savory, and balmy tea herbs..most of them are already up. Which is a good thing because I have something like 10 more seed flats to get onto the heat mat this week!! Did a major kickout in the honey house..all of our alliums and early kohlrabi are now on the hardening off bench enjoying the great out of doors!! Going to have to kick somebody else out this coming week..need to make space for some of the herbs and greens in the prophouse!!

In the high tunnel I got another succession of salad greens, beta greens, arugula, and radishes in..they are already coming up!! Have about 6 more trays of greens and lettuces to fit in..it's going to be close, but I think I can get them all squeezed in the remaining space!! Then we can start on filling in some of the space outdoors!!

Everything is growing well..one week out from our first harvest I have a better idea of what we will have..at this point..mustards and asian greens, salad greens, chives and oregano..definitely..kale, swiss chard..some but they don't grow quite as rapidly as the mustards and asian green....radishes..looks like we will have a few d'avignon{fench breakfast}... turnips..maybe..they are about the size of the end of my pinkie today..but the are in that rapid growth time..I may go ahead and do a few for turnip greens just to thin them a wee tad...lettuces maybe the second week of pickup they are looking good but still small...beets ..will be thinning them to go with the beta greens in about 2 weeks..carrots..growing well but the ones in the high tunnel won't be ready yet..do have a fall planting outdoors that we will be harvesting instead. Also from outdoors we will have overwintered leeks and onions to add to the mix..we MIGHT also have some rhubarb..it's growing well but might not be quite big enough yet.

Updates on our little birdie friends...

Coral is now laying..even moved her nest out of the walkway..Pumpkin is hilarious..and spoiled rotten..he loves to carry on conversations with just about anyone..so long as they are of the female persuasion!! We got the rest of the geese moved up to the space in front of the house..partially because we are getting into planting mode and partially because Della and Mom want to have a couple set again this year and can keep an eye on them better. Most of them seem to be laying in their nests in the big greenhouse{their nighttime quarters to keep them safe from predators}.

New little chickies are almost 4 weeks old now{this coming Wednesday}..They did eat a lot of grasshoppers in the high tunnel..not all but certainly reduced the population. They got too big for their little brooder pen in the house and are now out in the pen under the apricot tree..and loving the extra space!! Yesterday they discovered the "jungle gym"..the trunk of the apricot tree was just made for little chickies to run and fly up and down!! AND wednesday Mom and Della have a date to go get little duckies to raise..they want a couple more of the khaki cambells..preferably one of them male and they keep talking about a couple of runner ducks.

Fun happening we would like to get started here on the farm..a demonstration of how to use different veggies in the share. We are shooting for 3 Saturdays this season..early spring, peak season, and fall. If you have a favorite way to prepare your veggies that you wold like to share with everyone please let me know so we can get it all coordinated. Our THANKS to Kat and Stan for helping put this together!!

Workdays for April..every Sunday 9:00 am to noon.  Please let me know when you will be out!!  Can't come on Sunday? but have other days that work better for you?? Please talk to us about setting up and alternative time..Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday mornings work best for us.

NOTE: chickens are starting to lay more again..we are getting an abundance..also have goose and duck eggs..and goose eggs for setting..call 249-9725 to get some!!

Looking forward to growing for you!!
