CSA veggie pickup reminder

Posted 6/19/2015 9:05pm by Betsy Austin.

Happy Summer Solstice everyone!!

Note: 12th veggie pickup of the 2015 season is tomorrow morning!!!  9:00am to noon!!!

Another note: If you have not made a payment since April..now is the time!!

The heat is on!! Welcome to summer in the Rockies!! We did a bit of looking back to May while we were planting basil this morning..it had only been about a month since we had snow here on the farm!!{Mothers day weekend} And just short of two weeks since we had all the rain. This week has been mostly sunny and hot. Did have a slight respite from the blazing sun on Tuesday..was cloudy most of the day but still quite warm..but a very pleasant day for getting beds ready to plant, weeding peas, planting beans, and digging out a huge cottonwood root. Later we learned that parts of Delta and Mesa Counties had 60 mile an hour winds and marble sized hail!! Looks like the next week is going to be very warm and dry..I keep hearing rumors of triple digit temps but the forecast is saying high nineties.

Outdoor adventures are moving right along..we are still way behind in planting but the end is getting nearer. This week we planted peppers, eggplant, summer squash, tomatoes, the rest of the artichokes, hamburg parsley , celeriac, and basil. We also seeded green beans and edamame, weeded the pea patch again, worked on getting more beds ready to plant and dug out a huge cottonwood root..ok so Dave and Chris. two of our work share folks dug it out..thanks guys..the tomatoes and beans will be very appreciative in the coming weeks!!

Check out the poppy..it is at peak this week!!

Thank you Gail for coming out and helping us eliminate a gazillion weeds in the pea patch..picking them this morning was a snap!!

Note; we desperately need your help!!!..We are a still a good 3 weeks behind in our planting..and rapidly losing that window of time for crops to ripen before that first fall frost!! We can use extra help Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday!! I am heading out to the fields about 5:30 am while it is still a nice cool 50 degrees. Please come join me!! {you can come later but the best part of the day is at the crack of dawn..the sky is just lightening up,,the birds are waking up and starting their morning songs..the sunrise is pretty awesome!!}

In the tunnels..Picked over 40 lbs of favas this morning!! Swiss chard is going even nuttier this week!! We can see a few peppers starting to set fruit..most of the tomatoes have at least one tomato set so far...see a couple little cucs starting to grow..eggplant is blooming and okra is just planted!!

Time to sign up for another season of awesome fresh veggies!! We need 50 members this season!! We have 30 members at this point. We will still be signing folks up until we are full!!

  Please sign up and encourage friends, family, co-workers, etc to join us!! To sign up..just go to our website.. www.circleagarden.com  click on member signup and follow the directions.

Folks in both Telluride and Crested Butte/Gunnison are looking for more folks for their pickup groups..let me know if you would like to connect with them.

Not sure if our CSA is for you?  Have questions on how it works? Would you like to schedule a tour and talk to your farmer face to face? Please, don't hesitate to contact us through the website or by phone. {be aware that we are spending much of our daylight hours outdoors away from the phone..Please leave a message and we will be glad to get back to you in the evening!!}

Updates on our little birdie friends...

 new little chickies  are just about 6 weeks old..They have been coming out on the lawn in the chicken tractor and having a ball!! Have at least one little rooster..he's been trying to talk back to Cocky..it is not going well yet..he needs a LOT more practice!!

Old little chickies are almost 16 weeks old now{this coming Wednesday}..They look like little ladies..so pretty!! Happier that it is not raining so much this week..but not liking the afternoon heat too much.

New duckies are 12 weeks old now..They are not happy with the no rain thing!! they have been getting out early of a morning when it's cool..then napping most of the late morning and afternoon away..then setting off for adventures in the cooler temps of the evening.

Little Miss did it!! Now have 7 or 8 little goslings that are 5 weeks old. They are almost as big as their parents..not too many feathers yet..mostly just fluff..now that they are pretty good size they will be starting the feather thing,

We also have guinea keets..forgot about them last week!! They are now 5 weeks old. Della has a broody hen who is raising them..she may even let them come out of their house tomorrow.

Fun happening we would like to get started here on the farm..a demonstration of how to use different veggies in the share. We are shooting for 3 Saturdays this season..early spring, peak season, and fall. If you have a favorite way to prepare your veggies that you wold like to share with everyone please let me know so we can get it all coordinated. Our THANKS to Kat and Stan for helping put this together!!

Workdays for June..every Sunday 9:00 am to noon. {or you can come earlier to beat the heat!!} Please let me know when you will be out!!  Can't come on Sunday? but have other days that work better for you?? Please talk to us about setting up and alternative time..Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday mornings work best for us. NOTE: these will be the last Sunday workdays until late fall..Your farmers need a day off!!

NOTE: chickens are starting to lay more again..we are getting an abundance..also have goose and duck eggs..and goose eggs for setting..call 249-9725 to get some!!

What is available for the CSA?

Note: not sure what to do with your produce..check out our website..  www.circleagarden.com I keep adding more recipes as new stuff is ready to harvest.

This usually my best guess on Thursday evening..it can change as we get to harvesting.

NOTE: Food Safety..we do NOT consider any of our produce ready to eat{not even the salad greens!!} We chill it in cool water to remove the field heat and get some of the soil off but must recommend that you WASH your produce before eating!!
