CSA veggie pickup reminder

Posted 7/17/2015 4:26pm by Betsy Austin.

Happy Summer everyone!!

Note: 16th veggie pickup of the 2015 season is tomorrow morning!!!  9:00am to noon!!!

Another note: If you have not made a payment since April..now is the time!!

This week has been a bit warmer and much sunnier than last..much drier as well. Our highs have been mid to high 80's with lows hi 40-low 50's. A few random clouds off and on to cover the intensity of the sun..with some afternoon rumblings and a few drops of rain here and there. Humidity has been a bit higher than what those of us born and raised in Colorado are accustomed to..those born and bred in wetter climates are thinking it's about perfect!! This next week looks to be more of the same..maybe a few degrees warmer at night..and maybe an afternoon thunder shower or two.

Outdoor adventures are changing a bit this week..a little less focus on planting..much more focus on weeds..and what we are harvesting is changing rapidly. We are working on planting fall crops..transplanted cauliflower, brussel sprouts, and a few cabbages..seeded more parsnips, rutabaga, and mangals. Pulled at least a gazillion weeds..mostly in the onions, potatoes, and along the tomato trellises where the lettuce was. We started trellising tomatoes as well..they are all looking good..lots of blooms and maybe 1/3 have started setting fruit well. Garlic harvest has commenced!!..pulled the first 4 varieties. squash bug hunt yielded about 70 adults..too many egg clusters to keep track of..and a few nymphs. Starting to harvest more basil, first few summer squash, and sweet onions.

Other things happening in the great out doors..Lettuce is done for the season..salad greens are done until fall. Zinnias are starting to bloom..not as glorious as the ones clair planted last season!!

Thank you Kirk for coming out and helping us with our  adventures!! As well as Terry, Billie, Mikal, and Cerra for harvest day..you all rock!!

Note; we can still use your help your help!!!. Workdays for July and August are Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday..9-noon unless you want to come earlier to beat the heat!!

In the tunnels..fava wall is coming down..as we fertilize and mulch the chard and kale..tomato walls are going up..have all the tomatoes started up the trellis now..just have to keep them going up!! Harvested one lone black cherry tomato in the high tunnel this week..but he has LOTS of green friends..I guess we just have to be patient!! Harvested maybe 6 tomats from the low tunnel..I was thinking they were behind but went back and counted the days from transplanting..they should be starting to produce by mid-July and.. gee..it seems to be mid-July. They may play that waiting game with us, though..where they just tease us for a couple weeks 'cause we all want lots of tomats NOW!! Harvested only about 30 tomato horn worms from the low tunnel and 3 from the high tunnel..one harvest yield I am happy to see go down!!We started staking the peppers and thinned out the first few sweets of the season..lots more to come!! Picked the first little bit of eggplant and the first 7 or 8 okras. Lots more cucumbers this week..they we very appreciative of the sun!!

Time to sign up for another season of awesome fresh veggies!! We need 50 members this season!! We have 34 members at this point. We will still be signing folks up until we are full!!

Please, don't hesitate to contact us through the website or by phone. {be aware that we are spending much of our daylight hours outdoors away from the phone..Please leave a message and we will be glad to get back to you in the evening!!}

Updates on our little birdie friends...

new little chickies  are just about 8 weeks old..a bit more confident about tomato horn worms!! They missed the big girls for about 2 days but are now very happy with the extra space!!

Old little chickies are almost 20 weeks old now{this coming Wednesday} They moved down to the chicken coop with the rest of the chickens..seem to be liking it. Della throws out a bit of scratch for the chicken in the evening to bribe them into going to bed..she says while the older birds are all about getting in on the scratch the young ones are hopping up on the roosts and picking out the best sleeping spot!!

New duckies are 16 weeks old now..looks like we have 3 girls and 5 boys!!

Little Miss did it!! Now have 7 or 8 little goslings that are 9 weeks old. Now that they are getting a few feathers, they are harder to tell from the older geese.

Fun happening we would like to get started here on the farm..a demonstration of how to use different veggies in the share. We are shooting for 3 Saturdays this season..early spring, peak season, and fall. If you have a favorite way to prepare your veggies that you wold like to share with everyone please let me know so we can get it all coordinated. Our THANKS to Kat and Stan for helping put this together!!

Workdays for July, August, Sept..weekdays Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday. 9 am-noon unless you would like to come earlier to beat the heat!

What is available for the CSA?

Note: not sure what to do with your produce..check out our website..  www.circleagarden.com I keep adding more recipes as new stuff is ready to harvest.

This usually my best guess on Thursday evening..it can change as we get to harvesting.

NOTE: Food Safety..we do NOT consider any of our produce ready to eat{not even the salad greens!!} We chill it in cool water to remove the field heat and get some of the soil off but must recommend that you WASH your produce before eating!!
