CSA veggie pickup reminder

Posted 4/6/2017 7:57pm by Betsy Austin.

Happy Springtime in the Rockies!!!

First veggies pickup of the 2017 season is this coming Saturday..April 8th..9:00 am to noon!!

Tomorrow is the first harvest day of the season!! This week has been another springtime in the rockies week. The weekend was mostly cloudy and cool..not so much rain as last week..a slight skiff of snow Tuesday morning. Highs in the 40's and 50's..lows in the 30's until Tuesday night..24 degrees then. By Wednesday the sun was mostly back..chilly Wednesday but much warmer today. Looks like we have another sunshiny day tomorrow but another storm is moving in on Saturday. Sunday and Monday look to be cloudy and chilly but sun will be back by mid-week again.

Spring continues..lilac buds may have gotten frozen Tuesday night..peas are barely coming up..blackberries are barely budding..apple trees are starting to leaf out..and still more weeds are coming up!!

The high tunnel is looking awesome!! Lots of goodies ready for harvest in the morning. We got quite a bit of weeding done Early in the week..Thanks Sally for coming out Saturday and pulling tons of weeds!!

This next week we need to move another bunch of seedlings out to the honey house..after we kick a bunch of stuff out onto the hardening off bench. We waited a few days so we wouldn't have to move them all back in on that 24 degree night!! Peppers and eggplant I started last week are coming up nicely..started tomatoes for outdoors.

Outdoor adventures this week were mostly about getting the red raspberry patch ready for the season..we weeded and fertilized them and hopefully they won't need much attention until June or so when we start making sure they are in the trellis. This week was also about getting ready for the CSA pickup on Saturday..getting the shade cloth dropped in the veggie shed getting it cleared out ready for action on Friday..washing bins..raking and picking up in the the CSA area..going through the checklist and making sure we have things like rubber bands to bunch greens, batteries for the scales, salad bags, green scrubby things for washing bins as well as vinegar and soap..and the list goes on of lots of little things that don't seem like much until you don't have them in hand when you need them!! Mom and I were also able to go out and do a bit of weeding in the rhubarb patch.

If you haven't checked out the website or our facebook group, please do..it is so cool!! We would like feedback as well!!  www.circleagarden.com  there is a link to facebook on the homepage.

I am in search of interns, a couple more work share folks, and volunteers for the coming season..if you know anyone who might be interested please have them call me{970-249-9725..ask for Betsy}

We are 0 weeks out from that first veggie pickup!! The first veggie pickup will be April 8. Our CSA is not full yet so if you are still interested in fresh veggies we are still taking signups.  Please take a few minutes to go to the website to sign up for another season of amazing goodies!! Please go to www.circleagarden.com

What is available for the CSA this week?

This is my best guess on Thursday evening..sometimes we can't really tell just how ready a crop is for harvest until we get in there to harvest it..

Food safety reminder!! Please remember that none of are veggies are considered ready to eat..We chill them to get the feild heat out and remove a bit of soil. Please wash your veggies before you eat them!!

From the high tunnel

Swiss chard, kale, fava greens, bok choi, yakina savoy, tokyo bekana, mustards

salad greens, arugula, radishes, herbs

From the great out of doors

green onions, overwintered beets, horseradish, lovage

Hope you are all enjoying this spring weather as much as we are!!

Looking forward to seeing all of you on Saturday!!

Betsy, Terry, Jeanne, and all of us here at Circle A
