CSA veggie pickup reminder

Posted 6/23/2017 9:06pm by Betsy Austin.

Happy Summer!!!

The twelfth veggie pickup of the 2017 season is this coming Saturday..June 24th..9:00 am to noon!!

Note: next payment due..thanks!!

Well, I don't think we quite hit 100 this week..maybe only 99.9 1/2 early in the week!! Early in the week we were 95+ degrees during the day with nights low to mid 60. Thursday we started out with a few clouds..even had about 20 drops of rain..the clouds moved on and the sun came back. It was a bit hazy off and on and we were only in the low 90's. A bit cooler last night..about 55. Today was cooler..only 90. Just way hot and dry!! Next week looks like more hot and dry.

Food for thought.. Well, we will try the soapbox thing again in a couple weeks..I know many of you have a lot of opinions on food issues..we have talked about them!! I would just like to reach a wider audience. Anyway for now we want to know what you are doing with your fava beans??

In the high tunnel this week we planted okra..in the low tunnel we stuck in a few more tomatoes and 75 cinnamon basil plants that we are growing for a seed crop. Tomatoes in both tunnels are going nuts..the plants look very yellow from a distance they are so covered in blooms!! I see many more little green tomats!! I also see a couple of eggplant that have set fruit..a few peppers as well. So far it looks like there might be one little cuc ready for picking on Monday..not sure just how we are going to divide that out!! I picked 66 pounds or favas yesterday..looks like they might have one more week left..which is a good thing..as I was reaching through all the foliage I kept having tomatoes peek through to say hi!!

Outdoor adventures this week..Well, we planted more stuff!! Basil and celeriac..hopefully just one more week of planting frenzy to go!! Most of the seed we planted last week is starting to come up..all except parsnips and fennel..they always take their sweet time. Harvested the first cabbages and garlic scapes this week. Most everything is looking good..despite the heat!!

If you haven't checked out the website or our facebook group, please do..it is so cool!! We would like feedback as well!!  www.circleagarden.com  there is a link to facebook on the homepage.

More news this week..Terry and Rylan's babies are now about 4 weeks old..they have discovered the joys of cabbage leaves today!!

Intern update..they are on the road and may be here by Sunday..lord willin' and the crick don't rise!! woohoo!!!

we are still asking for help from you, our CSA members!! I will be hitting the fields about 6:30 or so{earlier if it heats up} Sunday through Thursday, weeding, prepping beds, planting, and more!! Please, Please come and give us a hand!! Please call me {970-249-9725..ask for Betsy} to let me know when you can make it so I can plan my days..Thanks!!

We are 12 weeks into the season!!  Our CSA is not full yet so if you are still interested in fresh veggies we are still taking signups.  Please take a few minutes to go to the website to sign up for another season of amazing goodies!! Shares will be prorated after June 1st. Please go to www.circleagarden.com

What is available for the CSA this week?

Note:..we have many recipes on the website to give you ideas about how to use some of our many veggies!!

This is my best guess on Thursday evening..sometimes we can't really tell just how ready a crop is for harvest until we get in there to harvest it..

Food safety reminder!! Please remember that none of are veggies are considered ready to eat..We chill them to get the feild heat out and remove a bit of soil. Please wash your veggies before you eat them!!

We are starting to transition from greens and goodies in the high tunnel to new spring plantings from outside..ideally as those greens in the high tunnel are through the first of the outdoor goodies are ready to harvest..unfortunately the greens are done, but peas, kohlrabi and cabbages are not quite ready..coming soon though!!

From the high tunnel

Swiss chard, kale, beta greens

 beets, carrots, fava beans, herbs

From the great out of doors

herbs, sugar snap peas, snow peas, english peas, kohlrabi, last of the radishes, portuguese kale, salad greens, baby head lettuce, celtice, cabbage, garlic scapes

NOTE: we have a line on a local source for eggs..one of our CSA member's dad raises chickens just down the road..have more info this week..The grower is Don Arnold at lower 48 farm..just over on Kinikin Road. They are free range and supplement their all natural feed ration with a goodly variety of bugs and weeds. We will have a few here at the farm for Saturday pickup.

Hope you are all enjoying this summer weather!!

Looking forward to seeing all of you on Saturday!!

Betsy, Terry, Jeanne, and all of us here at Circle A
