CSA veggie pickup reminder

Posted 6/30/2017 9:19pm by Betsy Austin.

Happy Summer!!!

The 13th veggie pickup of the 2017 season is this coming Saturday..July 1st..9:00 am to noon!!

Note: next payment due..thanks!!

The weather this week has been hot and dry...we have averaged a high of about 95 degrees all week..thank fully the lows have been in the 50's..a nice break from the heat. Abundant sunshine all week..the occasional stray happy little cloud a couple of times but no rain. Some nice breezes off and on with some harder gusts but mostly pretty calm. We are so looking forward to our "monsoon" season!! It would be nice to have some moisture and a bit cooler temps!! I think the last time we got any great amount of moisture was that wet, heavy snow we had just after Mother's Day!! I have my yearly request in for a nice gentle overnight rain..preferably starting about 3 pm Saturday afternoon and ending Sunday morning..we'll see how that turns out. This next week looks like we will still have the heat, but there is a slight chance of thunderstorms a couple of days.

Food for thought.. Well, we will try the soapbox thing again in a couple weeks..I know many of you have a lot of opinions on food issues..we have talked about them!! I would just like to reach a wider audience. Anyway for now we want to know what you are doing with your fava beans?? Thanks Tori and Melissa for posting what you did with your favas last week..Melissa's picture was beautiful and looked very tasty!!

In the high tunnel this week we picked just about the last of the favas, dropped the trellis for the beans, and picked the first 3 pounds of cucumbers!!

Outdoor adventures this week..We are just almost done with planting frenzy!!!!!! We worked hard getting the last few beds ready to plant..and got a good bit of them planted to melons and winter squash. Also planted another succession of bush beans in the former pea patch..the beans in this round should be colorful..light yellow, green, and a pink bean that we got from Laura over at High Desert Seed..should be interesting!!Just have 2 more flats of melons, 1/2 a flat of italian parsley, a few spots for beneficial habitat, and a bit more fennel left to go!! Please help us thank all our awesome work share folks Evan, Rhonda, Chris, Rae, Kim, Cassidy, Megan, Brenda Joyce, and Tricia for getting us through the last couple months!!

If you haven't checked out the website or our facebook group, please do..it is so cool!! We would like feedback as well!!  www.circleagarden.com  there is a link to facebook on the homepage.

More news this week..Terry and Rylan's babies are now about 5 or 6 weeks old..they have discovered the joys of playing king of the mountain on the huge pile of prickly lettuce we pulled for them!!

Intern update..We now have interns!! woo hoo!!! They arrived Tuesday afternoon and were up and busy pulling weeds at 6 am on Wednesday!! Please help us welcome Tom and Darian to Montrose..Please also helo us thank them for the awesome job they have done the last 3 days getting beds ready and planting the winter squash and melon patch!!

we are still asking for help from you, our CSA members!! I will be hitting the fields about 6:30 or so{earlier if it heats up} Sunday through Thursday, weeding, prepping beds, planting, and more!! Please, Please come and give us a hand!! Please call me {970-249-9725..ask for Betsy} to let me know when you can make it so I can plan my days..Thanks!!

We are 13 weeks into the season!!  Our CSA is not full yet so if you are still interested in fresh veggies we are still taking signups.  Please take a few minutes to go to the website to sign up for another season of amazing goodies!! Shares will be prorated after June 1st. Please go to www.circleagarden.com

What is available for the CSA this week?

Note:..we have many recipes on the website to give you ideas about how to use some of our many veggies!!

This is my best guess on Thursday evening..sometimes we can't really tell just how ready a crop is for harvest until we get in there to harvest it..

Food safety reminder!! Please remember that none of are veggies are considered ready to eat..We chill them to get the feild heat out and remove a bit of soil. Please wash your veggies before you eat them!!

We are starting to transition from greens and goodies in the high tunnel to new spring plantings from outside..ideally as those greens in the high tunnel are through the first of the outdoor goodies are ready to harvest..unfortunately the greens are done, but peas, kohlrabi and cabbages are not quite ready..coming soon though!!

From the high tunnel

Swiss chard, kale

beets, carrots, last of the fava beans, the first few cucumbers, herbs

From the great out of doors

herbs, kohlrabi, portuguese kale, salad greens, cabbage, garlic scapes and a lot of lasts that just are not liking the heat..peas, head lettuce. endive, celtice..note: even though I tasted just about all the lettuce and celtice there may be some that are a bit bitter from the heat.

NOTE: we have a line on a local source for eggs..one of our CSA member's dad raises chickens just down the road..have more info this week..The grower is Don Arnold at lower 48 farm..just over on Kinikin Road. They are free range and supplement their all natural feed ration with a goodly variety of bugs and weeds. We will have a few here at the farm for Saturday pickup.

Hope you are all enjoying this summer weather!!

Looking forward to seeing all of you on Saturday!!

Betsy, Terry, Jeanne, and all of us here at Circle A
