CSA veggie pickup reminder

Posted 7/7/2017 10:04pm by Betsy Austin.

Happy Summer!!!

The 14th veggie pickup of the 2017 season is this coming Saturday..July 8th..9:00 am to noon!!

Note: next payment due..thanks!!

So, has it been hot enough for everybody this week? All of here certainly think so!! Mom is even starting to complain about the heat!! It has been hot and dry again..a few random clouds showing up late in the evening, but otherwise extremely sunny. It missed a really good chance to rain here on the farm Sunday afternoon..I think we may have gotten a sum total of about 50 drops!! But it did rain somewhere..we could smell it..!! We have been looking fondly back to that heavy wet snow we got after Mother's day and thinking about how cool the temperature was..that was also the last really measurable precipitation we have had in about 6 weeks. We are getting so dry..I have my order in for my nice gentle overnight rain..at this point I will probably be happy with any rain..anytime!! The forecast looks a bit more promising for a bit of moisture this next week..there are many afternoons with a 20% chance of showers..and 3 days that are showing 40-50% chance. note..we don't get real excited until the forecast gets up to 50% before the monsoon kicks in well.

Food for thought.. the question for the week is..so what are you doing with your kohlrabi??

The landscape in the high tunnel changed drastically this week. The blue mustard and weeds over on the north side of the tunnel got chopped down and fed to the geese. The fava wall has come down..it made lots of wonderful mulch for the kale and chard. The tomatoes are going Wow..look at all this space we have!! It is a good thing we dropped the trellis for the beans last week..they are already about 1/2 way up it. The tomato wall are growing well..some are about 1/2 way up and a couple are reaching about 3/4 of the way up. We started trellising the cucumbers. AND we harvested the last of the beets and carrots this morning.

Our thanks to Marian for coming out and helping with chopping down the Mustard wall!!

Outdoor adventures this week mostly involved water and weeds!! We've been watering something almost everyday because of the heat..and pulling lots of weeds. Weeds, weeds, and more weeds!!! and the water is making even more sprout up..but it's starting to look more like a garden and less like a weed patch..I know we planted veggie in there some place!! The beans are up in what was formerly Dee's pea patch..it is now Cassidy's bean patch. Most of what we seeded a couple weeks ago is up and doing well..the fennel is now up..the parsnips are the only holdout now..they just are not wanting to germinate..could be the heat..could be they don't think they are getting enough water..could be my seed was not good..or they could just be taking their sweet time..sometimes it takes them a few weeks to get the memo to sprout.

Our thanks to Vicki for coming out and helping chop down the fava wall and pulling a few gazillion weeds

If you haven't checked out the website or our facebook group, please do..it is so cool!! We would like feedback as well!!  www.circleagarden.com  there is a link to facebook on the homepage.

More news this week..Terry and Rylan's babies are now about 6 or7 weeks old..they have discovered the joys of playing king of the mountain on the huge pile of prickly lettuce we pulled for them!! FYI Terry and Rylan's babies are goslings..

Intern update..Sad news..Tom and Darian are leaving Wednesday for the front range..They were offered jobs in their field of work. Please help us thank them for two weeks of awesome weed pulling and great energy. We wish them well and look forward to their visits here to the best side of the mountains!!

we are still asking for help from you, our CSA members!! I will be hitting the fields about 6:30 or so{earlier if it heats up} Monday through Thursday, weeding, prepping beds, planting, and more!! Please, Please come and give us a hand!! Please call me {970-249-9725..ask for Betsy} to let me know when you can make it so I can plan my days..Thanks!!

What is available for the CSA this week?

Note:..we have many recipes on the website to give you ideas about how to use some of our many veggies!!

This is my best guess on Thursday evening..sometimes we can't really tell just how ready a crop is for harvest until we get in there to harvest it..

Food safety reminder!! Please remember that none of are veggies are considered ready to eat..We chill them to get the feild heat out and remove a bit of soil. Please wash your veggies before you eat them!!

We are starting to transition from greens and goodies in the high tunnel to new spring plantings from outside..ideally as those greens in the high tunnel are through the first of the outdoor goodies are ready to harvest..unfortunately the greens are done, but peas, kohlrabi and cabbages are not quite ready..coming soon though!!

From the high tunnel

Swiss chard, kale

beets, carrots, a few more cucumbers, herbs

From the great out of doors

herbs, kohlrabi, portuguese kale, collards, cabbage, last of the garlic scapes

NOTE: we have a line on a local source for eggs..one of our CSA member's dad raises chickens just down the road..have more info this week..The grower is Don Arnold at lower 48 farm..just over on Kinikin Road. They are free range and supplement their all natural feed ration with a goodly variety of bugs and weeds. We will have a few here at the farm for Saturday pickup.

Hope you are all finding cool spaces during this heat!!

Looking forward to seeing all of you on Saturday!!

Betsy, Terry, Jeanne, and all of us here at Circle A
