CSA veggie pickup reminder

Posted 7/28/2017 8:11pm by Betsy Austin.

Happy Summer monsoon!!!

The 17th veggie pickup of the 2017 season is this coming Saturday..July 29th..9:00 am to noon!!

Well, I think monsoon is here!! We have had several nice little rain showers...as well as a couple of gully washers the last two weeks. This week we started out on Friday night with a nice overnight shower..Saturday was cloudy most of the day with a few sprinkles here and there..Sunday and Monday were sunny with a few happy clouds rolling in everywhere except where the sun was..Tuesday and Wednesday we had off and on rain with periods of sunshine..Thursday was mostly sunny..today started out cloudy with a few sprinkles then lots of sunshine until late this afternoon..right now we have a nice gentle rain going on. The temperatures have ranged high 80's to low 90's with abundant humidity..once again those of us born and bred in Colorado are feeling rather sticky..everyone from those moister areas are loving it.

Food for thought.. the question for the week is..What is it worth to you to feed your family fresh, local, nutrient dense food? I think I will briefly get on my soapbox again and give you a farmers point of view. Humans need 4 things to survive..clean air to breath, clean water to drink, nutritious food to eat, and a bit of shelter from the storm. Without food to eat it takes us about 3 weeks to starve to death..we need food to eat each and everyday to live..most of us here in the USA are used to 3 squares per day. We need food in order to stay alive and yet one of the most common complaints I here is "oh, food costs so much". So if food is something you need to stay alive and healthy..what is it worth..more than your cell phone?..brand name clothing?..brand new car?..weekend away from home?..new sports equipment?..gym membership?..

If you haven't peeked in the tunnels lately, you will be astonished at the difference in the landscape just in the last month!! They look so much different with all their warm season goodies than they did earlier in the season with all the green leafies and spring roots. Earlier on I could look down from the top of the tunnels and see just about everything except for the tomatoes hiding behind the favas..now I have trouble seeing anything behind the tomatoes and beans...and everybody is having touble finding me when I am behind the tomats as well!! This week we picked the first few hot peppers..a goodly amount of eggplant, lots of cucumbers, and about 3 pounds of tomatoes.

Well outdoor adventures involved a bit less water, still lots of weeds{but they are getting smaller!!}, and harvesting garlic. We are harvesting more basil and parsley each week now..as well as the first of the summer squash, the first outdoor cucumber{only one so far!!},and the first broccoli. The winners of the harvest this week..well, kohlrabi, cabbage and cucumbers from the tunnel. Veggies to look forward to soon..artichokes..they are starting to bud, green beans..the first variety has buds, and something else that I checked out earlier in the week and can't remember now!!

If you haven't checked out the website or our facebook group, please do..it is so cool!! We would like feedback as well!!  www.circleagarden.com  there is a link to facebook on the homepage.

More news this week..Terry and Rylan's babies are looking more like adults now..still sound like babies, though.

we are still asking for help from you, our CSA members!! I will be hitting the fields about 6:30 or so{earlier if it heats up} Monday through Thursday, weeding, prepping beds, planting, and more!! Please, Please come and give us a hand!! Please call me {970-249-9725..ask for Betsy} to let me know when you can make it so I can plan my days..Thanks!!

What is available for the CSA this week?

Note:..we have many recipes on the website to give you ideas about how to use some of our many veggies!!

This is my best guess on Thursday evening..sometimes we can't really tell just how ready a crop is for harvest until we get in there to harvest it..

Food safety reminder!! Please remember that none of are veggies are considered ready to eat..We chill them to get the feild heat out and remove a bit of soil. Please wash your veggies before you eat them!!

We are still a bit low on goodies from the garden..things are growing well and many are just almost ready for harvest..please bear with us a couple more weeks..we promise we will have something other than kohlrabi!!

From the high tunnel

Swiss chard, kale, cucumbers, herbs, eggplant,a very few peppers and tomatoes

From the great out of doors

herbs, kohlrabi, portuguese kale, collards, cabbage, garlic, broccoli, a bit of summer squash, basil, parsely

NOTE: we have a line on a local source for eggs..one of our CSA member's dad raises chickens just down the road..have more info this week..The grower is Don Arnold at lower 48 farm..just over on Kinikin Road. They are free range and supplement their all natural feed ration with a goodly variety of bugs and weeds. We will have a few here at the farm for Saturday pickup.

Hope you are all enjoying the rain!!

Looking forward to seeing all of you on Saturday!!

Betsy, Terry, Jeanne, and all of us here at Circle A
