CSA veggie pickup reminder

Posted 8/4/2017 8:14pm by Betsy Austin.

Happy Summer monsoon!!!

The 18th veggie pickup of the 2017 season is this coming Saturday..August 5th..9:00 am to noon!!

Happy, happy, happy rain!! Most of the week was nicely sunny early in the day with some happy little showers in the afternoon and evening to help cool things down. Well, all except for yesterday when our afternoon thunder shower happened at 9 am!!..made picking basil problematic!! our highs have been in the mid 80's to low 90's..our lows have been low to mid 50..all in all a pleasant week weather wise!!! And it looks like we may have more of the same next week as well!!

Food for thought.. Question of the week..what are you doing with cucumbers???

Tunnel adventures are more and more about harvesting veggies!! Did do a bit more tomato trellising..will have a bit more until all the tomats reach the top of the trellis..just a few more slower growing plants to go!! We picked about 20 lbs of tomats this week..about 6 times as many as last week..and many more getting ready to ripen!! Cucumbers are just about at peak..picked over 60 lbs this week{there will be more from outdoors soon}

Did more weeding{seems never ending!!}, more tomato trellising, more garlic harvesting{just have elephant garlic left}, planted the first seeds for fall roots and harvested lots of goodies for tomorrow. Some of you will be glad to know that we harvested the last of the kohlrabi this morning..I think we are going to plant turnips in their place!!We harvested quite a bit of broccoli this morning..it is quite happy this year..nice 1-2 lb heads..so far no over achievers. also harvested the first few artichokes and the first 4 heads of cauliflower ..it is also looking quite happy. Once again the harvest winners this week are kohlrabi, cabbage, and cucumbers from the high tunnel!!

If you haven't checked out the website or our facebook group, please do..it is so cool!! We would like feedback as well!!  www.circleagarden.com  there is a link to facebook on the homepage.

More news this week..Terry and Rylan's babies are looking more like adults now..still sound like babies, though.

we are still asking for help from you, our CSA members!! I will be hitting the fields about 6:30 or so{earlier if it heats up} Monday through Thursday, weeding, prepping beds, planting, and more!! Please, Please come and give us a hand!! Please call me {970-249-9725..ask for Betsy} to let me know when you can make it so I can plan my days..Thanks!!

What is available for the CSA this week?

Note:..we have many recipes on the website to give you ideas about how to use some of our many veggies!!

This is my best guess on Thursday evening..sometimes we can't really tell just how ready a crop is for harvest until we get in there to harvest it..

Food safety reminder!! Please remember that none of are veggies are considered ready to eat..We chill them to get the feild heat out and remove a bit of soil. Please wash your veggies before you eat them!!

From the high tunnel

Swiss chard, kale, cucumbers, herbs, eggplant,a very few peppers and tomatoes

From the great out of doors

herbs, last of the kohlrabi, the first of the cauliflower, portuguese kale, collards, cabbage, garlic, broccoli, a bit of summer squash, beets, basil, parsely

NOTE: we have a line on a local source for eggs..one of our CSA member's dad raises chickens just down the road..have more info this week..The grower is Don Arnold at lower 48 farm..just over on Kinikin Road. They are free range and supplement their all natural feed ration with a goodly variety of bugs and weeds. We will have a few here at the farm for Saturday pickup.

Hope you are all enjoying the rain!!

Looking forward to seeing all of you on Saturday!!

Betsy, Terry, Jeanne, and all of us here at Circle A
