Happy Fall!!

We have 8 more weeks of CSA pickup for the 2017 season..last pickup will be November 25th

Note..payment due

Lots has happened here on the farm since I last gave you an update..rain, sunshine, weeds, harvests, fall frosts..but so far no snow!! August we saw more rain, abundant sunshine, 70 and 80 degree daytime temps, mostly 50 degree nighttime temps with 4 or 5 nights dropping into the high 40's. September was pretty mellow..more sunshine than rain..but still had a bit of rain here and there..a couple of pretty spectacular lightning and thunderstorms..did have our first fall frost late in the month..down to 27. This first week of October started out cold..it was 38 when we started about 7 am..was still 38 at noon..more evening thunder showers and another frost..again down to 27..but the last two days have been sunny and downright warm.

Food for thought.. Question of the week..what are you doing with lots of celery..

Tunnel adventures during August and most of September have mostly been all about harvesting!! peppers, eggplant, green beans, tomatoes, and lots of cucumbers! Early in September we got all those baby greens transplanted..was hard to find enough space for them all!!

So much has been happening outdoors the last couple months it is hard to know where to begin!! Weeding and trellising adventures rapidly went to harvesting adventures..like overnight!! All of a sudden we were right in the middle of peak season..and harvesting everything!! especially cucumbers..our peak week number on them was 150 lbs. Tomatoes came in second with 147 lbs.. Some surprises..celery went from a struggling 6 inches in June and July to over 3 foot tall 3 to 4 lb of plant after we harvest and trim it all up for the CSA!! Beets have been ecstatic after we got them all weeded back in June..it's been really hard to find many of them that are smaller than a tennis ball. Melons have been pouting since those cooler nighttime temps back in August..lots of really pretty melons out there..they are just taking their own time to ripen..we've been harvesting 20-25 usable melons since about mid-September..looks like we may have more this week..we are already up to 25 and it is only Wednesday!! We did a couple of seed crops this year..fava beans, radishes and the shallot we found and loved last year..we've gotten them harvested..now just need to finish cleaning them!! The last couple weeks we have been harvesting winter squash and tomatoes for storage..the squash we will be starting to put into pickup around halloween..the tomats..depending on how fast they ripen we will have some for the next few weeks.

If you haven't checked out the website or our facebook group, please do..it is so cool!! We would like feedback as well!!  www.circleagarden.com  there is a link to facebook on the homepage.

What is available for the CSA this week?

Note:..we have many recipes on the website to give you ideas about how to use some of our many veggies!!

This is my best guess on Thursday evening..sometimes we can't really tell just how ready a crop is for harvest until we get in there to harvest it..

Food safety reminder!! Please remember that none of are veggies are considered ready to eat..We chill them to get the feild heat out and remove a bit of soil. Please wash your veggies before you eat them!!

From the high tunnel

Swiss chard, kale, peppers tomatoes and a few cucumbers, beans. eggplant and okra

From the great out of doors

tomatoes, last of the outdoor peppers and eggplant, broccoli, carrots, radishes, turnips, beets, onions, celery, celeriac, parsely

NOTE: we have a line on a local source for eggs..one of our CSA member's dad raises chickens just down the road..have more info this week..The grower is Don Arnold at lower 48 farm..just over on Kinikin Road. They are free range and supplement their all natural feed ration with a goodly variety of bugs and weeds. We will have a few here at the farm for Saturday pickup.

Hope you are all enjoying fall!!

Looking forward to seeing all of you on Saturday!!

Betsy, Terry, Jeanne, and all of us here at Circle A
