Veggie Pickup Reminder

Posted 4/17/2019 1:52pm by Betsy Austin.

Happy Springtime in the Rockies!!

Note: Second veggie pickup of the new season will be this coming Saturday ,April 20, from 9 am to noon. looking forward to seeing you all!!! Not signed up yet? We have 33 more weeks of fresh goodies to go...they just get better and better!!!

Spring is marching on!! The weather the last couple weeks has been, well. spring like. We have had some days that have been glorious...abundant sunshine...very few clouds... nice spring breezes...warm, but not too warm temperatures...just down right perfect!! Then we have had those days when the weather just can't make up its mind what it wants to do!! The sun shines for a bit...then the wind starts blowing and the clouds roll in...then it rains some...hails some...snows some...all within a couple of hours!! The temperatures are slowly warming though...last week we had a couple days of pretty cold temps...highs barely in the 40's. lows in the mid 20's. This week most of our highs have been high 50's to almost 70 with lows mid 30's to mid 40's. Mot a great amount of precipitation, though. It would be nice to have that nice gentle overnight rain for all our newly planted beds!!

In the prop house, things are still booming ….Terry just moved a bunch of stuff out to the honey house the other day...I think I have all the space she made full again!! I have been working on pricking up all sorts of little herbies, celeriac, broccoli, cauliflower, zinnias, marigolds and china asters. I have also potted up more pineapple sage and lemon verbena that I rooted from cuttings. Right now the shelves are all full of tomatoes. peppers. eggplant. and cucumbers for the high tunnel and lots of herbs. The space below the shelves is full of flowers, broccoli, cauliflower, celeriac, and more herbs that have just been pricked up. I also have seed trays of cabbages and late cabbages just about ready to prick up and a couple of trays of very happy lemon grass that I rooted earlier in the season. The heat mat is not quite as full as it was...mostly has roselle, pineapple sage and lemon verbena that is about ready to come off, sweet potato slips and a seed flat of peppers and eggplant just germinating for the great out of doors. But I need to start tomatoes and basil this week and I think next week it is time to start outdoor cucumbers, okra, and something else so it will be full to over flowing again.

In the high tunnel...everything is VERY happy. The girls gave it a good weeding last week on a couple of those days that the weather couldn't make up its mind. Friday was our first harvest...we managed to pick radishes, the first few turnips, lots of greens{Tokyo bekana, bok choi, mustard, yakina savoy, kale, etc.}, salad lettuce, braising greens, arugula, baby bok choi, and chives. Boy are they yummy!!!

Outdoors... boy have things have really been happening out there the last couple of weeks!!! Peas, favas, beets, carrots, radishes, and turnips are up....alliums{onions. leeks. and shallots}, more greens, lettuces, and more are all transplanted. Everyone looks great!!! The garlic is almost all up, the rhubarb is just about big enough to pick{if not this week then next}. Bulbs are blooming. many of the herbs are coming up. the apricots and the nanking cherries are in full bloom.
