Happy Abodonza!!

 veggie pickup will be this coming Saturday,  9 am to noon!!!

Note: please be kind to your farmers..e-mail before 5:30 Thursday if I need to bag..after Thursday please call and leave a message on the machine. Also please plan to be able to pickup your veggies with in the pickup time. Please call if you are running late..Your farmers are ready to pack it in at noon so we can eat lunch and have an afternoon rest.

A bit cooler and wetter the last two weeks..had some nice rain several times week before last..a few lighter showers off and on this past week. Temps in the 80's much of the time..overnight temps ranged from about 50 to 60..much more pleasant to work in. Well, except for the picking in the pouring down rain last week!! Looks like this coming week will be drier, but highs still in the 80's..much better than the 90's we had a few weeks ago!!

It's a jungle out there in the fields!! everything has just been growing so much since the first of July!! Melons are taking over!! Even have some softball sized melons on the vines..our early one is starting to net{goes from smooth green to that rough cantaloupe texture}..see a few emerald gem..a couple of snow leopards..and a lot of other ones I can't identify yet..they just look like green baseballs right now!! Harvested the first green beans this week..they are going nuts!! Tomatoes are getting out of their allotted space..picked the first half dozen or so..LOTS more really green ones. Tomatillos are also taking up more than their share of the room..they have lots of little pods, but aren't full yet. Broccoli and cauliflower are both very happy right now..they had a rough start and didn't look too great during the hot and dry, but are looking wonderful..had a hard time harvesting them this morning..the path between them has disappeared!! So much is going on out there..

Still pulling yet more weeds!! And thinning apples..as well as picking some of the early summer ones. Getting beds ready for more fall roots..harvesting a LOT of crops..beans, basil, cucs, tomatoes, pepper, eggplant, a bit of summer squash and zuchetta, celery, greens, carrots, onions, broccoli, a couple of cauliflower, cabbage..and more..but NOT any kohlrabi!!

In the tunnels..Harvesting a bit of just about everything now..okra, tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, cucs, chard, kale, a few herbs..most everything but the yard long beans..and they are starting to bloom so won't be long!

Our thanks to Ryan and Joyce for coming out to give a hand the last 2 weeks..Ryan pulled a ton of weeds, thinned and picked a lot of apples, and helped me with Thursday harvest..Joyce made the high tunnel very happy..she pulled Soooo many weeds!! thanks to you both..you rock. Our thanks also to my great nephew Mikal for coming out every Friday during his summer vacation to help with harvest and getting veggies ready for Saturday pickup..we will miss you!!

Workdays for the rest of the summer are Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday mornings..9-noon or come earlier to beat the heat. Please come out and help your garden grow!!

What is available for the CSA?

This is my best guess on Thursday what we will be harvesting on Friday..

Please be aware that our veggies and greens are NOT ready to eat..we chill them in a cold water bath to get the field heat out and some of the soil off. We recommend you wash before eating

NOTE please be aware that I am only checking the e-mail once a week..mostly on Thursday..If I need to bag for you please call 970-249-9725 before noon on Saturday!

Still have shares available for our special peak season abodanza share!!

Saturday and Sunday were hot and sunny..Monday and Tuesday we had a bit of relief from the sun..it was pretty much overcast..no rain though. Yesterday and today were pleasantly cool until about 9 am then warmed up quickly..still way hot even now at almost 7 pm. It seems like the sun is not quite as intense as it was a few weeks ago..still plenty hot..in the 90's. Nighttime temps have been in the 50's to low 60's so at least the day starts out comfortable!! Next week looks like more of the same except more highs in the 80's rather than 90's.

Most everything out in the field has been enjoying the weather..squashes are looking better{or at least bigger!!}..basil harvest doubles this week..beans are blooming and some of them have little itty bitty beans set..2 varieties of eggplant went nuts this week..other 3 are blooming well and setting fruit..pepper are starting to grow little peppers..cauliflower is looking well; maybe starting to head..cucs are starting to gear up..zuchetta has filled all it's space on the trellis and trying to take over more room..

This week we pulled even more weeds..you would think we could run out at some point!! harvested more garlic..next week we shold be finishing up..trellising raspberries..thinning more apples..planting fall brassicas..and pulling more weeds.

In the tunnels..tomatoes and cucs are almost to the top of their trellis..yard long beans are starting to run..and have buds..eggplant is very happy..peppers are coming right along..harvested a few more tomats..hopefully next week we will start to have an abundance out of the low tunnel!! I think the sweet potato vines grew at least a good foot or more!!

 Thank you Sally for coming out and helping tackle thistle in the garlic patch..it made harvesting on Wednesday so much nicer!!  Thank you to all our interns, work share folks, volunteers, CSA members, and all our young farmer friends for coming out to share in all our adventures..you are all awesome!!}

We are offering a short 10 week peak season share. We just don't have enough full season shares to use all the peak season abodonza this year. It will run July 23-Sept. 24. Please help us pass the word!!

Well, the weekend was hot and sunny..then along came Monday..overcast and much cooler!! A bit of a shower early while I was picking cucs in the high tunnel..a nice shower in the evening. The rest of the week has been mostly cloudy with afternoon and evening thundershowers..cooler unless the sun was peeking out from the clouds. Highs in the 80's..lows in the high 50's-low 60's. All in all a very pleasant week!! The forecast for next week looks drier and warmer..temps up into the 90's..but still looks like we might have an occasional afternoon or evening thundershower. Do you suppose our monsoon has kicked in?? I heard earlier in the season that maybe we weren't going to have much of a monsoon season this year..hopefully the info was wrong!!

Things out in the feild are looking better this week..the rain made everyone feel happier!! Still not sure on the squashes..the summer squash is looking better, but some of the winter squash is still not taking off like I think it should. I am much happier about the basil after it's first picking this week. Green beans are blooming..outdoor cucs are starting..picked the first striped armenian, silver slicer, and pickling cucs this morning. Peppers and eggplants are starting to set fruit.

We spent a good bit of our outdoor week pulling weeds, harvesting garlic{just 2 more varieties to go!!}, trellising blackberries and cucs, thinning a few more apples..and did I mention weeding??

In the tunnels..Wow!! things are growing well..and starting to produce. A few more peppers and eggplant..5 more tomatoes..all cherry. Did not find any tomato horn-worms this week..so where one had munched in the high tunnel..but not worm..hopefully my little birdie buddy has been busy{and showed his friends where the goodies are!!} Sweet potatoes are starting to want to take over the path..they are very happy right now!!

Well, no happy little clouds to cover the sun this week..just more hot and dry sunshiny weather. Highs have been in the mid 90 range with overnight lows in the 50's. Makes getting out to the fields at 5:30 of a morning very pleasant and inviting. unfortunately it has been heating up quite rapidly..by 9:30 or so it is blazing!! evenings have been fairly pleasant though..still hot, buy we've had some pleasant little breezes to cool us off just a bit. The forecast for next week is still hot..90's during the day..60's at night..BUT we might at least get a happy cloud or two to block the sun. Maybe we'll get some rain as well. Today the forecast is predicting a 10-20 percent chance of rain..I'm not going to hold my breath until it says at least 50 percent!! Unless, of course, everyone washes their car or plans huge outdoor events that the rain would disrupt!! Maybe a rain dance??

Most things out in the field are looking great!! A few things are struggling..the squashes are not looking as well as I would like..summer quash are just not taking off..even the ones I re-seeded..some of the winter squash are looking well..some are not. Squashes this season may be iffy. The basil seems like it is also struggling..seems like it is late taking off..it is looking better this week so maybe I am just pushing it a bit..I'm ready for tomatoes and basil..in anything!! Green beans are starting to bud..picked the first 2 outdoor cucumbers this morning..determinate out door tomatoes are setting fruit..I can see dozens are little green tomatoes from clear across the field on a couple of them..celery, celeriac, and artichokes are looking well after their weeding{Mom has been out weeding quite a bit in the mornings and the evenings after it cols off..she is amazing!!} Most of the fall roots we planted last week are up.

We spent a good bit of our outdoor week pulling weeds, harvesting garlic, trellising blackberries and cucs, harvesting the last of the currant and nanking cherries, thinning a few more apples..and did I mention weeding??

In the tunnels..Wow!! things are growing well..and starting to produce. OK, so the cucs have been coming on for a couple of weeks now..this week they went into overdrive!! Harvested the first eggplant and peppers..not a lot yet but both have many fruit set and are blooming up a storm!! In the high tunnel I harvested the first 5 tomatoes..one was a slicer..the others were supposed to be black cherry..not sure what happened there..the plants are looking and growing like black cherry..But the fruit is all wrong..they look like an orange purple plum..hmm. They are just loaded with fruit..but I was really looking forward to that first black cherry!! In the low tunnel, I went out to check for ripe tomatoes..and found 57 tomato horn-worms..I've been checking and thinking maybe there wouldn't be so many..turns out I was just rushing them!! Fun thing while I was "harvesting" horn-worms..my little sparrow buddy who hangs out in the high tunnel eating grasshoppers came in to help me..snagged one worm..it was almost as big as he was..ate it,,but just couldn't eat any more!! The next day while I was working on the tomato trellis in the high tunnel he came in and was trying to get me to find him another horn-worm!!

 Thank you to all our interns, work share folks, volunteers, CSA members, and all our young farmer friends for coming out to share in all our adventures..you are all awesome!!}

Happy summer!!

 veggie pickup will be this coming Saturday,  9 am to noon!!!

Time to make a payment if you haven't already!!

After a brief respite for the summer heat..3 whole days of clouds and rain..we are into week 5 of summer heat. I don't think it is quite as hot..low 90's instead of high 90's..nice for all those warm season goodies, but not as nice as the clouds and rain for your farmers. I had to break down and find my coat 2 days in a row..Friday and Saturday..it was wet and in the high 70's so seemed cold in my summer attire of shorts and t-shirt!! The forecast is calling for at least another week of hot and dry..no rain..but I am hoping for the random happy little cloud to come along and cover the sun for a bit while I am out in the field!!

So many fun things are happening out in the field..some of the cucumbers now have little girl blossoms, beans are starting to run{new romano this season called early riser is almost to the top of the trellis!!}, melons most all have a few blossoms and are starting to vine, peppers and eggplant are growing well and starting to bloom, some of the tomatoes are just barely starting to bud, onions are starting to bulb, zuchetta has a couple of little girl blossoms, hollyhocks are finally blooming{some are way taller than I am!!}, currant and nanking cherries are ripening. Some of the not so fun things..well the weeds are VERY happy after all that rain, peas are done..just way too hot, this is the last week for lettuce..again just way too hot for it, turnips are really struggling so this may be the last week for them as well.

We spent a good bit of our outdoor week pulling weeds. We also seeded some of the fall roots, harvested the first variety of garlic, strted trellising outdoor cucs, picked a lot of nanking cherries and currants, and started on apple thinning.

In the tunnels..well the fava wall is now only about 18 inches tall..we are slowly getting them out..we are in the process of weeding and fertilizing the chard and the kale..then using the favas as mulch. The tomato walls are rapidly growing up..some of the are about 2/3 of the way to the top..all of them are blooming well and have lots of very green tomats..no ripe ones yet!! Cucumbers are starting to boom..each week they have doubled their yield..and there are 3 varieties that are not producing yet!! I see 3 little eggplant that will be rady next week..and maybe some peppers..there were a couple this week that looked like they might be ready for harvest, but when I checked them this morning they just weren't quite there. Picked the first few okra this morning..it has been hiding behind the fava wall..just hanging out.

 Thank you to all our interns, work share folks, volunteers, CSA members, and all our young farmer friends for coming out to share in all our adventures..you are all awesome!!}

Happy summer!!

 veggie pickup will be this coming Saturday,  9 am to noon!!!

Time to make a payment if you haven't already!!

Last week started out as week 4 of summer heat..then Wednesday afternoon happened!! The clouds came rolling in and covered the sun, a nice breeze came up..it was really quite pleasant!! Then Just about the time Mom got all settled in to weed; there was a big crack of thunder and before we could even take a breath the heavens opened up and poured BUCKETS of rain on her parade..she didn't think it would last but a few minutes..but came in after about 10 minutes dripping wet!! It continued to pour for about another 10 minutes, then settled in to about half an hour of my nice gentle rain I'm always asking for. It was cooler for a couple of days then the heat returned..not quite as hot but close. It clouded up nicely again yesterday evening and we had a few light sprinkles. Then about 5:30 this morning I got some of my nice gentle rain for about an hour..just in time for pea pickin'..boy was it a muddy mess out there in the pea patch!! Was a bit cooler, cloudy, and a few sprinkles off and on the rest of the day. Looks like it is going to rain some more tomorrow..just in time for harvest day..and Saturday..just for veggie pickup!! The forecast for next week looks to be hot and dry again..maybe not quite as hot as it has been..in the higher 80's rather than higher 90+.

Planting is slowing down..all of our warm season crops are in..now we need to start on fall roots and brassicas. We are all taking a deep breath and enjoying a few weeks of not so intense stuff..a time to do a LOT of meditative{?} weeding..watching the plants grow as we care for them..thinning apples..preparing ourselves for harvesting all those veggies in another month or so!!

The landscape in the tunnels is certainly different these days..the fava wall is coming down..favas are done and we will use all that organic matter to mulch the chard and kale..tomato and cucumber walls are going up..peppers have many little baby peppers..eggplant is blooming..okra is growing well..yard long beans are up and will be looking for the trellis soon..sweet potatoes vines are starting to grow rapidly..tomats in the low tunnel are just covered with blossoms and little green tomats..

 Thank you to all our interns, work share folks, volunteers, and all our young farmer friends for coming out to share in all our adventures..you are all awesome!!}

Workdays for the rest of the summer are Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday mornings..9-noon or come earlier to beat the heat. Please come out and helo your garden grow!!

Fun local food event June 25th benefiting Valley Food Partnership

Wine and Dine in the Vine

Garret Estate Cellars and Chef Nick from the Bistro have teamed up to create a tasty evening of local wine and food. It starts at 5:30 pm and dinner will be served at 6. For more information please call VFP{970-249-0705 or visit the website  www.valleyfoodpartners.org

Week two of summer heat!!! Boy is it hot..we reached 90 most of the week!! A few{very few} happy little clouds coming in to help break the intensity of the sun..mostly in the afternoon after we were through for the day. Monday afternoon we had clouds AND lots of wind..we have been thankful for a cooling breeze whenever it happens but anything that wasn't nailed down is somewhere in Delta again!! Our nighttime lows have been very pleasant and greatly appreciated..mostly high 40's up to high 50's. Looks like we might get just a bit of rain this weekend and a bit cooler..about mid 80's but back up in the 90's by mid week. All our warm season goodies should just be lovin, it!!

Fun spring stuff is making way for fun almost summer stuff{summer solstice is still a couple of weeks off}..after all that wind Monday the rose is not so spectacular..we had yellow snow there for a bit..still a few blooms but it is going fast. The poppies are rally starting to pop..the bees are ecstatic!!..california poppy is bloomin' away..peonies are pretty much full open this week. apples have set a bazillion little apples{guess what we will be doing soon!!} Peas are starting to form..currants are just starting to turn..

Planting frenzy continues!! I think we only planted about 2500 trans plants this week..the last of the onions are in!! Next week the numbers of transplants won't be as impressive but the space that we will plant will be. We have 5 allium beds with something like 6 or 7 thousand plants..the eggplant and pepper bed we did yesterday is the same size as one of the onion beds but only has about 100 plants..when it gets to growing it will look much more impressive than the onions beds!! We planted onions, broccoli, cauliflower, cucumbers, peppers, eggplant, green beans, and more this week.

Everything in the tunnels are lookn' good..tomatoes are blooming well..they are ready for their trellis..cucs are going nuts..I think they doubled in size this week..have a couple of cucs that are about 2 inches long{and maybe as big around as a straw}..I think soon they will be producing well!! We trimmed the fava wall a bit this morning when we picked favas{37 lbs of them!!} so we can drop the trellis for the tomats..Lindsay and I are once again taller than the favas!!

 Thank you to all our interns, work share folks, volunteers, and all our young farmer friends for coming out to share in all our adventures..you are all awesome!!}

 Sad note..Lindsay left this morning after fava and garlic adventures..she will be back for a couple days next week before she starts on her Western Adventure!! We will all miss her!! It has been so much fun sharing all the fun spring stuff with her..she has taken such good care of all our little plants..the favas came through..I think the peas and cucs will be producing a bit this coming week.

Please also help us welcome Kyle to our farm family..he is from Texas and is interested in learning the farm thing from the soil up!!

Time to sign up for another season of awesome fresh veggies!! We need 50 members this season!! So far we are up to about 25 {including our work share folks} shares signed up..with at least 10 that have said they are going to. Please folks..sign up soonest..if you aren't signed up, you are not on my list!!

How does it work?? Well we start signing up members for the new season in January..this helps us with planning..we need to know how many folks we are going to be growing for so we know how much we need to plant. In addition your deposit or payment gives up a bit of capitol for all those early season expenses that happen before we have any crops ready for harvest..seeds, amendments, water, utilities, wages, etc. Then April through mid-December..you come to the farm and pick out your share of the harvest..that's 37 weeks of the most awesome produce you have ever eaten!!

  Please sign up and encourage friends, family, co-workers, etc to join us!! To sign up..just go to our website.. www.circleagarden.com  click on member signup and follow the directions.

Folks looking for share partners or pickup groups..please let me know and I will post it here.

May have some folks in Ridgway looking for more folks for a pickup group{a pickup group is a group of 2 or more shares taking turns with pickup responsibility.}

Not sure if our CSA is for you?  Have questions on how it works? Would you like to schedule a tour and talk to your farmer face to face? Please, don't hesitate to contact us through the website or by phone. {be aware that we are spending much of our daylight hours outdoors away from the phone..Please leave a message and we will be glad to get back to you in the evening!

Workdays for  June..every Sunday 9:00 am to noon. Also Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday!!! Please let me know when you will be out!! Tis the season!! Planting frenzy is starting!! any and all help will be greatly appreciated!!!

Well, I think the rain is over for a while and the heat is on!! Last week was fairly dry..temperatures were warm..in the high 70's..quite pleasant. This week it really started heating up!! Highs in the mid to high 80's and very few happy little clouds to block the intensity of the sun. Thank goodnes we live in a region with little humidity and cool nights..high 40's to low 50's. Looks like we may break 90 this weekend and more heat to come next week!! Didn't it just snow in the high country last weekend??

Fun spring stuff is making way for fun almost summer stuff{summer solstice is still a couple of weeks off}..the rose is in full bloom this week..just awsome..please take a few minutes out on Saturday to admire..they will be starting to wane by next week. The poppies are just starting to bloom..5 blossoms this morning with many more to come..california poppy is bloomin' away..peonies opened their first 2 flowers this week. Irises are still blooming but are fading fast..apples have set a bazillion little apples{guess what we will be doing soon!!}..we may have the first few kohlrabies of the season..the cabbages are heading nicely..AND the peas just started blooming this week.

Planting frenzy continues!! I think we planted close to 6,000 little plants this week!! OK so at least 3,500 were onions and leeks..artichokes, last planting of lettuces, parsley, celeriac, hamburg parsley all out doors. And more peppers, eggplant and okra in the high tunnel.

Have filled in much of the space in the high tunnel with warm season delights..fava wall is now taller than I am..I saw our first little black cherry tomato last week..I thought it was a bug..was so glad it wasn't!! Lindsey saw the first taxi tomato in the low tunnel this morning..we are seeing a few little buds on the cucs..the sweet potatoes are starting to take off.

 Thank you to all our interns, work share folks, volunteers, and all our young farmer friends for coming out to share in all our adventures..you are all awesome!!}

 Sad note..Lindsay will be leaving us on June 9..please help us thank her for all her hard work!! We will all miss her!! It has been so much fun sharing all the fun spring stuff with her..she has taken such good care of all our little plants..we are hoping that at lest the favas, peas, and at least one cucumber will be ready to harvest before she leaves on her adventures!!

May have some folks in Ridgway looking for more folks for a pickup group{a pickup group is a group of 2 or more shares taking turns with pickup responsibility.}

Happy May!!

eighth veggie pickup of the 2016 season will be this coming Saturday, May 21st.. 9 am to noon!!!

Work days for May..Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday mornings 9 am to noon..or come earlier to beat the heat!! We are in planting frenzy..have just a few short weeks to get everything planted..any and all help is greatly appreciated!! Please let me know when you can make it out to the farm..best way to let me know is on Saturday morning or call me 249-9725 after 6:pm or leave a message on the machine..Thanks

Rain has continued off and on this week. Saturday was awesome, though..nice and sunny, warm but not too warm..many folks were able to hang around and chat{and smell the lilacs!!}..I enjoyed all the fun conversations!!  Sunday was sorta cloudy with a few rumbles..Monday fairly cloudy with some afternoon rain..Tuesday was sunny early, but was very rumbley and then the heavens opened up and pored buckets just in time for lunch..also added a bit of hail for a minute or so. Wednesday started out sunny, then clouded up and talked real big but didn't rain here. Today was cloudy early then some scattered clouds here and there. Temperatures have been pleasant to just a bit cool at times during the day..in the 60's and 70's.  Night time lows have been hanging in there about 38 to 42 degrees

Still lots of fun spring stuff happening..The lilacs are pretty musc done..BUT the roses are coming along nicely..lots of buds..Lindsay saw the first open flower this morning..should be showing{and smelling} pretty well by next week. The poppys are starting to bud and one is starting to show color..won't be long before they get going!! The garlic is getting huge!! Della's bearded iris are really starting to bloom. I can see little baby fruit on the cherries, currants, and the apricot. Trees are leafing out all over..weeds are growing..

It has been a another busy week here on the farm. We have been working on getting beds ready to plant..planted more alliums and celery..Mom has been working on weeding the cabbages and kohlrabi..working towards getting the drip up and running..in between rain showers.  The prophouse, honeyhouse, and hardening off bench are all full to overflowing. Have just a few more things to start in the prophouse this weekend..then we just have to get it all planted!!

The landscape is changing rapidly in the high tunnel..the favas are growing rapidly..found a couple of 3-4 inch beans when we put their next tie on..fava wall is now taller than Lindsay!! Filled in most of the space we made last harvest with sweet peppers..all shapes and colors!! Cucumbers, tomatoes, and sweet potatoes are lookin' good!! They all look so small right now, though, compared to all the greens that were there last month!!

 Thank you to all our interns, work share folks, volunteers, and all our young farmer friends for coming out to share in all our adventures..you are all awesome!!}

 Sad note..Lindsay will be leaving us in June..please help us thank her for all her hard work!! We will all miss her!!
