Happy Fall everyone!!

Note: Only six weeks left of the 2015 season!! Last veggie pick up will be December 12th!! Pickup time is now 11:00am to 2:00pm!!!

NOTE: Time for another payment!!

Note! note! note! Looks like our last cooking demo with Kat with be November 14!! We need to confirm the date and decide what time..probably about 11 am.

Well, I think winter is on it's way!! The week started out much dryer with lots of sun..by Wednesday it was over!! It started raining Tuesday night..was pouring about 6 Wednesday morning..drizzled most of the morning while we were harvesting all those fall roots..the sun came out briefly in the afternoon. Thursday we had our first snow flurries of the season..not a great amount but everything from sleet to great huge snowflakes. Today it was supposed to be clear and sunny..well it wasn't..a few brief bits of sun but otherwise cloudy and cold with a few bits of snow. I think our high for today was maybe 43..supposed to be way cold tonight..forecast is calling for about 18..brrrr!!!

This week we spent our time harvesting potatoes and getting that area ready for garlic, harvesting lots of fall roots, and moving our veggie washing operation into the high tunnel. Potato harvest is once again very disappointing..need to come up with a different game plan for the potatoes next season..we changed it a bit this spring..used beds that haven't had nightshades for about 6 years, didn't plant them as intensively and gave them special fertilizer..but they still were not real happy. Not sure what is going on..it may be the cooler season and all the rain..could be insect or weed pressure..could be a disease problem that we haven't ever had before. Until the last couple years we haven't had too much of a problem with the taters..almost always had bumper crops despite the bugs and weeds!! Have one more bed to go..then it's on to garlic planting!! We've been slowly harvesting fall roots to get into storage but haven't been pushing it too much cause the weather has been so nice..looks like this next week we will be harvesting LOTS of roots!! We pulled out the sweet peppers this week to make way for the sinks, tables, coolers, and whatever else we use when we are getting your veggies ready for you. It was Soooo much nicer playing in the water this morning!! It's going to take us a while to get used to the veggie shed..it looks so different without everything in it and the shade cloth rolled up!!

Please help us thank Lindsay and all our workshare folks..Terry, April, Chris, Tami, and Corina for hanging in there in our not so delightful weather!!!

Please help us welcome Lindsay..our fall intern to Montrose!! She is a delightful young lady from New Jersey.

Note; we can still use your help your help!!!. Workdays for November are Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday..9-noon. We can do some Sunday workdays as well for those that work during the week..you need to let me know if you are going to come out on a Sunday.

Well, fall has hit the farm the last 2 weeks. Last week it rained a good bit of the week..then cleared off just a bit and we got our first fall frost Friday night..we were down to about 28. This last week was nice and sunny a good bit of the weekend then rained most of Monday. Sunny Tuesday and Wednesday..hard frost Tuesday night..down to 26. Cloudy most of the day yesterday and rained much of today..I think our high for today is in the low 40's. Looks like we might have some sunshine this weekend but much rain with a possibility of snow late this coming week.

Last week we tried to stay dry..worked up until Thursday..that's the day we start major picking for the weekend..poured down rain most of the morning..did lighten up a bit in the afternoon..still rained but it was just a drizzle!! If you happen to see Terry, Lindsay or Chris help us thank them for slogging through harvest!! We were all very wet and cold before the end of the day. Friday was dryer but still cold..please help us thank Lindsay, Terry, Tami, and Corina for helping us finish up getting everything we harvested Thursday ready for you Saturday Morning!! This week was a bit dryer..still cold..we just are not ready for it..we got very spoiled with all those sunny days last month!! The frosts pretty much took out all our warm season goodies..they look so sad and brown out in the fields. But all our fall goodies came through with flying colors..they look so green and vibrant against the brown of the warm season stuff!!

Thank you Kat for coming out and helping weed all our fall greens in the tunnel..They are looking great!! A special thank you to Sally for coming out the last few weeks and washing bins..one of those not so fun jobs that we need to do every week so we have clean bins to harvest into..Thanks!!

Please help us welcome Lindsay..our fall intern to Montrose!! She is a delightful young lady from New Jersey.

In the tunnels..Fall greens are looking great..chinese cabbage is starting to head up..have started to harvest the bok choi, yakina savoy, and the vivid choi..The girls finished digging sweet potatoes in the low tunnel this morning{one of our rainy day tasks we have been working on!!} Not as good a yeild on the  sweet potatoes this season..but most of them are huge!! The biggest weighs in at 7 lbs..not sure just how we are going to divy them up!!

Happy Fall everyone!!

Note: 28th veggie pickup of the 2015 season is tomorrow morning!!!  11:00am to 2:00pm!!!

NOTE: Time for another payment!!

Well, the glorious fall weather continues!!! Still no frost..not even a hint and it is already mid-October!! A bit cooler this past week..highs in the high 70's lows high 30-low 40 range. There is a storm starting to come in this evening..supposed to be rainy a good bit of the weekend and into Monday or Tuesday with highs in the 60's..lows in the high 30's untill it clears out, but still not freezing.

We are anticipating the frost..so a good bit of the week was spent getting some of our warm season goodies harvested..just in case!! Worked on the winter squash..a bit disappointing..not as many as in years past..still some out there, but they need a bit more time. We chickened out today and harvested any of the tomatoes that look like they will go ahead and ripen out..not so many going into storage as in years past..but we have been harvesting them for a month longer than usual!! Looks like this week is the last for melons. Did a final harvest on peppers, eggplant, cucumbers, and summer squash..might be a few more next week depending on the weather. We are ready to move on to fall crops..sunchokes, turnips, winter radish, parsnips, rutabaga, mangals, sugar beets, brussel sprouts and more!! We've been harvesting a few things here and there, but some of them will better after a touch of frost.

Please help us welcome Lindsay..our fall intern to Montrose!! She is a delightful young lady from New Jersey.

NOTE: food safety..our melons are grown in soil!! Melons are very high in sugars..all bacteria..the good, the bad, and the ugly love sugar to grow!! Please wash your melons thoroughly before you cut them!! As you cut them, you inoculate that whole cut with any bacteria that is on the outside of the melon!!

Note; we can still use your help your help!!!. Workdays for October are Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday..9-noon unless you want to come earlier to beat the heat!! We need to get a start on winter squash harvest

Note Note!! We are going to do a Special Sunday Get the Harvest in Before Frost Day!! Sunday October 18. We will be harvesting any warm season crops that we didn't get to this week and maybe even start on some of our fall roots and shoots.

In the tunnels..Fall greens are looking great..chinese cabbage is starting to head up..may have bok choi in the next couple weeks!!

Happy Fall everyone!!

Note: 28th veggie pickup of the 2015 season is tomorrow morning!!!  11:00am to 2:00pm!!!

NOTE>>NOTE>>NOTE!!! This week!!!  October 10 the new time will be 11 am to 2 pm. Please pass the word to your pickup groups or to anyone that will be picking up for you!!

Well, not quite such a glorious week!! We had just a bit of rain Sunday night and Monday..not a huge amount just drizzles off and on most of the night and day. Then the sun started coming back Tuesday..not as warm as last week but not too bad for fall weather!! Highs have been in the high 60's early in the week..70's later after the sun came back. Lows have been in the low-mid 40's except for one night when we got down to 38. No freeze yet!! but the high peaks did get a bit of snow!! Looks like we will have more nice sunny weather for another week..then looks like another storm is moving in next weekend.

Fall is definitely in the air this week..just a bit of a nip to the breeze..and at least one of your farmers had to break down and wear long pants and shoes!! Tomatoes are still going strong..not quite as many this week..only 136 lbs. Melons have gone nuts!! Even more melons for the CSA this week!! Not sure what to do with all that melon?? Well, a few things we have tried in the past are..freezing it..just cut into chunks or use a melon baller and stick in the freezer..nice additions to smoothies through the winter!! Make sorbet..and freeze for winter. Making melon jam..melons make an awesome jam..one of our favorites is melon pineapple..I think Terry was going to try a melon blackberry. Dehydrate it..cut into chunks or slices and dry it..makes awesome little snack bites for outdoor adventures..or for just munching..warning..can be addictive!! and it is very hard to eat just one..you can start out with a whole bag and the next thing you know it's all gone!! I have more melon recipes on the website... www.circleagarden.com

FYI: Melons like lots of heat to develop their sweetness so our melons this year may not be quite as sweet as usual.

We will be harvesting warm season crops that will be hurt by a frost..

In the tunnels..Tomatoes are still going strong..peppers are getting done..if this weather continues they may have more..there are a lot of little peppers that have just set in the last few weeks but may not have time to mature out. Chinese cabbage is still growing strong..the rest of the greens are lookin' good. I'll sure be glad when the red choi and the red rain get bigger..right now it looks like there are big gaps in the bed..{they are dark colored and don't show up well against the soil}!!

Happy Fall everyone!!

Note: 27th veggie pickup of the 2015 season is tomorrow morning!!!  9:00am to noon!!!

NOTE>>NOTE>>NOTE!!! Fall is here..days are much shorter..and it is getting cooler in the early mornings..it is time to change our veggie pickup hours. Next week.. October 10 the new time will be 11 am to 2 pm. Please pass the word to your pickup groups or to anyone that will be picking up for you!!

Well, another glorious fall week!! Lots of sunshine..a couple days that it got downright hot!! Highs have been in the 80's..lows in the high 40's. We reached record breaking highs for this time of year a couple days..some of our highs this last week of Sept and first week of October were higher than some of the highs back in July and August!! Today was incredibly warm..incredibly sunny..and incredibly windy so there must be a storm brewing someplace. The forecast this next week is calling for cooler temps..70 degree days with low 40's at night..we might even get a bit of rain by Monday or Tuesday!!

Fall is still happening, but this week was more like summer abodanza. Summer squash made a comeback..little squashes grew like weeds..we had been picking it 3 times a week to keep it small..it seemed to be dwindleing so this week we only picked it once..quite a few fairly good sized zucs. Tomatoes really boomed this week..harvested almost 150 lbs..we've been getting about 100 lbs each week during September. AND the melons finally decided it was time!! Lots of melons this week!!

Note Note!! We may do a Special Sunday Get the Harvest in Before Frost Day!! We need to give the winter squash as much time as possible to mature before we pick them. {They were late going in as well and really needed more heat during July and August} So far the weather is holding but may be sending out an emergency frost e-mail during the next few weeks!! Please let me know if you will be available to help us!!

In the tunnels..Tomatoes in the low tunnel..well last week I figured they were on their way out..Tuesday we got a few..then today we got about 30 lbs!! Tomats in the high tunnel decided to speed up their ripening as well. We got a few more trays of greens planted..everybody is looking great!! I think the chinese cabbage grew about 6 inches since last week!!

Updates on our little birdie friends...

Little Miss did it!! Now have 7 or 8 little goslings that are 20 weeks old. They are learning a new food group this week..split melons..the older geese love them..the babies just aren't quite sure yet..if all goes well they will be getting a few more.

new baby duckies are now 10 weeks old!! We have a theory{and we are sticking to it!!} The ducks with the big feet are the boys..the ones with the smaller feet are the girls!! Happy Fall everyone!!

Note: 26th veggie pickup of the 2015 season is tomorrow morning!!!  9:00am to noon!!!

NOTE>>NOTE>>NOTE!!! Fall is here..days are much shorter..and it is getting cooler in the early mornings..it is time to change our veggie pickup hours. In two weeks..October October 10 the new time will be 11 am to 2 pm. Please pass the word to your pickup groups or to anyone that will be picking up for you!!

Well, the last two weeks have been glorious!!! Don't you just love fall?? Lots of sunshine..most days have been nice and warm..but not too warm!!..nights have been a bit cool at times..we had a couple of 40 degree nights last weekend. Mostly our daytime temps have been hi 70's to mid 80's..did have a couple of days that barely reached 70. Nighttime temps have been anywhere from 40 to 50. The forecast is calling for more of the same..lots of sunshine..highs in the low 80's with lows in the 40's. I wouldn't mind having a nice long fall..like clear up to Christmas!! I am NOT ready to add more layers..I am already starting to lose my jacket..I put it on in the early morning..take it off where ever I am when the sun hits me..and then I can't find it the next morning!!

Signs of fall are happening all over out in  the fields..summer squash is dwindling..blackberries are just about finished..peppers are turning bright and glorious colors..almost down to the last week of fennel..fall roots are getting bigger..brussel sprouts are making little sprouts..fall cabbages are starting to head up..we are hitting the fields later..almost 7 instead of 5:30.. AND yet the melons are still waiting to ripen!! But we got twice as many melons this week as last..{ok so we only got 7 last week!!}..but if we continue to have all this sunshine they may go ahead and ripen!! This week we got a few swan lake, some emerald gems, a couple of canary melons. and a couple of watermelon. AND some of the others are looking like they could ripen up any minute now!! We did plant them later than in past years..it was just so cool early on..{remember the snow on Mother's day weekend? Della and Terry are STILL telling me about it!!}..but they should have started ripening by Sept.1!!

Note; we can still use your help your help!!!. Workdays for September are Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday..9-noon unless you want to come earlier to beat the heat!!

Thanks to Joyce for coming out Wednesday and Rylan {our great nephew} for coming over Thursday to help out!! Also, please help us thank Kat for an outstanding job making our veggies shine!!

In the tunnels..Tomatoes in the low tunnel are waning..soon it will bee time to start harvesting sweet potatoes. Have a sweet potato question for next season..I keep reading and hearing about purple sweet potatoes and I think I might like to try a few..{you know me and purple veggies!!}They take a much longer season than the orange ones we are doing now..would you like us to try a few purples if I can find slips in the spring?? Fall planting of greens is going in slowly but surely..some of the holdup is waiting for summer crops to come out..some is we have had to spend a lot more time than normal picking blackberries..but we have gotten over half of them in..most of the rest are slated to go in Monday. The ones we have gotten planted are lookin' good..already putting up new growth!!

Updates on our little birdie friends...

new baby duckies are now 9 weeks old!! We have a theory{and we are sticking to it!!} The ducks with the big feet are the boys..the ones with the smaller feet are the girls!!

Well, this week was oh so much drier!! It was cloudy early on in the week..clearing and sunny by early afternoon...maybe 10 whole drops of rain. By Tuesday the sun was back in all its glory...from dawn to dawn!!! High temperatures early in the week in the 70's..today it hit 85..lows have been in the 40's all week. Who enjoyed a week of sunshine?? Well, pretty much all of us here at the farm..it was so delightful to harvest and work out in the fields without all that water pouring down!! The forecast for next week is calling for a bit of rain early in the week with sunshine later on.

Was a much better week for getting out into  the fields..Mom has been oh so happy to be able to get out of the house..she has been working on weeding our fall roots..they are lookin' good!! The melons appreciated the sunshine..they have been waiting for it..Della harvested our first 5 watermelons today!! Hopefully if we get another good solid week of warm sunny weather the rest of the melons will decide to start ripening. There are lots of melons out there, but they like warmer, sunnier days than we have been getting to start ripening out. If you haven't been out in the gardens for a while, the sunchokes are in full bloom right now..spectacular!!

In the tunnels..We plan on starting to plant greens next week..lord willin' and the crick don't rise!! Okra and malabar spinack will be coming out soon to make way for more greens. Tomats are still going strong. Chard and kale..especially the kale is very happy!! Peppers are amazing..many of them are starting to sport their fall colors..lots of reds, yellow, and orange to brighten up the CSA this week.

Well, Mother Nature must of heard us complaining about her timing on the rain last week..sooo she sent us more..much more..all at very inconvenient times. It rained some Saturday and Sunday evening..which we were ok about except that we needed to play catch up on the berry picking. Monday morning started out rainy..did clear a bit so we could get part of the berries picked..I don't think it rained much Tuesday so we were able to get the rest of Monday's picking of berries done..but it rained Tuesday night so we had to wait for the berries to dry before we got them picked. Was clear Wednesday evening, but about 5am Thursday morning it started in with lots of thunder and lightning..and buckets of rain..let up just a bit about 6:30..then more buckets..that let up about 8 or so..but continued to just drizzel off and on the rest of the morning and into afternoon. We got through picking and getting produce into the cooler about 3:30..the rain stopped..the clouds went away..and the sun came out. By this morning the clouds were back..and so was the rain..not so much as Thursday..mostly just short sprinkles here and there. The berries dried out well, but the basil would almost be dry enough to pick..and it would rain just enough to get it wet again. We hate to complain about any rainfall we get, but...... At least the weather forecast is saying that next week will be drier!!

A good bit of our week was spent waiting for things to dry out!! While we were waiting we slogged around in the mud, pulled a few weeds here and there, and harvested when we could!! Didn't get much weeding done in our fall plantings..just too darn wet!!

Note; we can still use your help your help!!!. Workdays for September are Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday..9-noon unless you want to come earlier to beat the heat!!

In the tunnels..tomatoes are starting to reach peak..over 100 lbs from the tunnels this week!! Did some work during the rains getting beds ready for all those greens we started a couple weeks back and harvesting our blue mustard seed we grew out.

Our chef demo and tasting went well..lots of great food, lots of fun ideas, and lots of great folks hanging out, talking and sharing ideas!! My main problem was I didn't know what I wanted to try to make first!! Please help us thank Kat for coming down and showing off our veggies!!

Just a bit damper this week..hot and dry until Wednesday..cloudy Wednesday..rainy off and on Wednesday afternoon, evening and into Thursday morning. Thursday was sunny and things were drying out a bit, but sometime between midnight and about 4 am it really rained..everything was VERY wet Friday morning!! This is that time of year when we here at the farm have very definite ideas about when we would like it to rain..while most of our crops will tolerate being harvested wet or while it is raining there are 3 that don.t do so well..basil, beans, and blackberries. The basil turns black, the beans rust, and the blackberries mold if they are picked wet and then put into the cooler..we pick blackberries Monday, Wednesday, and Friday..we pick green beans Tuesday and Friday..and we pick basil on Friday..then of course we have CSA pickup on Saturday. So we figure it can rain of an afternoon sometime between about 3 and 6..early enough so that everything will be dry by the following morning{and so we don't have to do evening chores in the rain!!} On Saturday it can start raining about 3 or so, let up for evening chores, then gently rain all night and into Sunday morning..but it has to quit in time for things to dry out for Monday!! Somehow I just don't think Mother Nature is on the same schedule as we are!!

This weed outdoors we pulled another gazillion weeds..next week we need to focus on all our fall seed beds..SOOOO many weeds popping up!! The sugar beets, mangals, and rutabaga are big enough to thin and use the greens for the CSA..they will be in the greens category tomorrow morning. The mangals and the sugar beets are related to swiss chard and beets.  the greens can be used much the same as the chard and beet greens...The Rutabaga is a brassica and is related to kale, collards, turnips, etc. The blackberries are going nuts!!..LOTS of them this week!!

Note; we can still use your help your help!!!. Workdays for August are Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday..9-noon unless you want to come earlier to beat the heat!!

Not so much thunder and lightening this week..Makes Oreo, oh, so happy!! Mostly sunny {and smokey!!} this week..high in the 80's..some lows down into the 40's again..42 Sunday night!! The forecast looks like we might get a bit of moisture in the coming week.

Our focus outdoors is switching more from weeding to harvesting. That doesn't mean we don't have more weeds to pull..but in most areas we seem to be getting ahead of them a bit!! Mom and Della went out earlier this week and harvested onions..walla walla and cabernet. The wallas will store short term..the cabernet will be in the veggie pickups late in the season. We got them all sorted and hung. The blackberries are starting to ripen rapidly..this week was the first week of major picking..Mondays picking mostly went into the freezer for jam and wine..that last hail we had really messed them up..Wed and Fri pickings were much better. The summer squash has peaked!! Egplant, pepper, and tomato are growing well and we have been harvesting a few here and there. Today we picked the first 5 lbs of green beans!! Almost all our babies are up..beets, radishes, turnips, and kohlrabi are pretty much all up..the first few carrots are starting to come up.

Note; we can still use your help your help!!!. Workdays for August are Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday..9-noon unless you want to come earlier to beat the heat!!

In the tunnels..Everythng decided it was time to get with the program and start ripening a bit faster..we harvested over 40 lbs of tomats just from the high tunnel, the jimmy nardello peppers are going crazy{red sweet pepper that all our interns have voted the best tasting pepper they have EVER had for about 6 years now. The okra was just waiting for Alex to get back to Oregon..it's yield jumped about 4 times this week!! All the trays we seeded last week are up and looking good..we will be starting to transplant them into the tunnel as warm season goodies start coming out in Sept. You can see them over on the west side of the lawn..please,send them love and warm thoughts!!
