Happy summer!!

 veggie pickup will be this coming Saturday,  9 am to noon!!!

Time to make a payment if you haven't already!!

Last week started out as week 4 of summer heat..then Wednesday afternoon happened!! The clouds came rolling in and covered the sun, a nice breeze came up..it was really quite pleasant!! Then Just about the time Mom got all settled in to weed; there was a big crack of thunder and before we could even take a breath the heavens opened up and poured BUCKETS of rain on her parade..she didn't think it would last but a few minutes..but came in after about 10 minutes dripping wet!! It continued to pour for about another 10 minutes, then settled in to about half an hour of my nice gentle rain I'm always asking for. It was cooler for a couple of days then the heat returned..not quite as hot but close. It clouded up nicely again yesterday evening and we had a few light sprinkles. Then about 5:30 this morning I got some of my nice gentle rain for about an hour..just in time for pea pickin'..boy was it a muddy mess out there in the pea patch!! Was a bit cooler, cloudy, and a few sprinkles off and on the rest of the day. Looks like it is going to rain some more tomorrow..just in time for harvest day..and Saturday..just for veggie pickup!! The forecast for next week looks to be hot and dry again..maybe not quite as hot as it has been..in the higher 80's rather than higher 90+.

Planting is slowing down..all of our warm season crops are in..now we need to start on fall roots and brassicas. We are all taking a deep breath and enjoying a few weeks of not so intense stuff..a time to do a LOT of meditative{?} weeding..watching the plants grow as we care for them..thinning apples..preparing ourselves for harvesting all those veggies in another month or so!!

The landscape in the tunnels is certainly different these days..the fava wall is coming down..favas are done and we will use all that organic matter to mulch the chard and kale..tomato and cucumber walls are going up..peppers have many little baby peppers..eggplant is blooming..okra is growing well..yard long beans are up and will be looking for the trellis soon..sweet potatoes vines are starting to grow rapidly..tomats in the low tunnel are just covered with blossoms and little green tomats..

 Thank you to all our interns, work share folks, volunteers, and all our young farmer friends for coming out to share in all our adventures..you are all awesome!!}

Workdays for the rest of the summer are Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday mornings..9-noon or come earlier to beat the heat. Please come out and helo your garden grow!!

What is available for the CSA?

This is my best guess on Thursday what we will be harvesting on Friday..

Please be aware that our veggies and greens are NOT ready to eat..we chill them in a cold water bath to get the field heat out and some of the soil off. We recommend you wash before eating

NOTE please be aware that I am only checking the e-mail once a week..mostly on Thursday..If I need to bag for you please call 970-249-9725 before noon on Saturday!

Fun local food event June 25th benefiting Valley Food Partnership

Wine and Dine in the Vine

Week two of summer heat!!! Boy is it hot..we reached 90 most of the week!! A few{very few} happy little clouds coming in to help break the intensity of the sun..mostly in the afternoon after we were through for the day. Monday afternoon we had clouds AND lots of wind..we have been thankful for a cooling breeze whenever it happens but anything that wasn't nailed down is somewhere in Delta again!! Our nighttime lows have been very pleasant and greatly appreciated..mostly high 40's up to high 50's. Looks like we might get just a bit of rain this weekend and a bit cooler..about mid 80's but back up in the 90's by mid week. All our warm season goodies should just be lovin, it!!

Fun spring stuff is making way for fun almost summer stuff{summer solstice is still a couple of weeks off}..after all that wind Monday the rose is not so spectacular..we had yellow snow there for a bit..still a few blooms but it is going fast. The poppies are rally starting to pop..the bees are ecstatic!!..california poppy is bloomin' away..peonies are pretty much full open this week. apples have set a bazillion little apples{guess what we will be doing soon!!} Peas are starting to form..currants are just starting to turn..

Planting frenzy continues!! I think we only planted about 2500 trans plants this week..the last of the onions are in!! Next week the numbers of transplants won't be as impressive but the space that we will plant will be. We have 5 allium beds with something like 6 or 7 thousand plants..the eggplant and pepper bed we did yesterday is the same size as one of the onion beds but only has about 100 plants..when it gets to growing it will look much more impressive than the onions beds!! We planted onions, broccoli, cauliflower, cucumbers, peppers, eggplant, green beans, and more this week.

Everything in the tunnels are lookn' good..tomatoes are blooming well..they are ready for their trellis..cucs are going nuts..I think they doubled in size this week..have a couple of cucs that are about 2 inches long{and maybe as big around as a straw}..I think soon they will be producing well!! We trimmed the fava wall a bit this morning when we picked favas{37 lbs of them!!} so we can drop the trellis for the tomats..Lindsay and I are once again taller than the favas!!

 Thank you to all our interns, work share folks, volunteers, and all our young farmer friends for coming out to share in all our adventures..you are all awesome!!}

 Sad note..Lindsay left this morning after fava and garlic adventures..she will be back for a couple days next week before she starts on her Western Adventure!! We will all miss her!! It has been so much fun sharing all the fun spring stuff with her..she has taken such good care of all our little plants..the favas came through..I think the peas and cucs will be producing a bit this coming week.

Please also help us welcome Kyle to our farm family..he is from Texas and is interested in learning the farm thing from the soil up!!

Time to sign up for another season of awesome fresh veggies!! We need 50 members this season!! Well, I think the rain is over for a while and the heat is on!! Last week was fairly dry..temperatures were warm..in the high 70's..quite pleasant. This week it really started heating up!! Highs in the mid to high 80's and very few happy little clouds to block the intensity of the sun. Thank goodnes we live in a region with little humidity and cool nights..high 40's to low 50's. Looks like we may break 90 this weekend and more heat to come next week!! Didn't it just snow in the high country last weekend??

Fun spring stuff is making way for fun almost summer stuff{summer solstice is still a couple of weeks off}..the rose is in full bloom this week..just awsome..please take a few minutes out on Saturday to admire..they will be starting to wane by next week. The poppies are just starting to bloom..5 blossoms this morning with many more to come..california poppy is bloomin' away..peonies opened their first 2 flowers this week. Irises are still blooming but are fading fast..apples have set a bazillion little apples{guess what we will be doing soon!!}..we may have the first few kohlrabies of the season..the cabbages are heading nicely..AND the peas just started blooming this week.

Planting frenzy continues!! I think we planted close to 6,000 little plants this week!! OK so at least 3,500 were onions and leeks..artichokes, last planting of lettuces, parsley, celeriac, hamburg parsley all out doors. And more peppers, eggplant and okra in the high tunnel.

Have filled in much of the space in the high tunnel with warm season delights..fava wall is now taller than I am..I saw our first little black cherry tomato last week..I thought it was a bug..was so glad it wasn't!! Lindsey saw the first taxi tomato in the low tunnel this morning..we are seeing a few little buds on the cucs..the sweet potatoes are starting to take off.

 Thank you to all our interns, work share folks, volunteers, and all our young farmer friends for coming out to share in all our adventures..you are all awesome!!}

 Sad note..Lindsay will be leaving us on June 9..please help us thank her for all her hard work!! We will all miss her!! It has been so much fun sharing all the fun spring stuff with her..she has taken such good care of all our little plants..we are hoping that at lest the favas, peas, and at least one cucumber will be ready to harvest before she leaves on her adventures!!

Rain has continued off and on this week. Saturday was awesome, though..nice and sunny, warm but not too warm..many folks were able to hang around and chat{and smell the lilacs!!}..I enjoyed all the fun conversations!!  Sunday was sorta cloudy with a few rumbles..Monday fairly cloudy with some afternoon rain..Tuesday was sunny early, but was very rumbley and then the heavens opened up and pored buckets just in time for lunch..also added a bit of hail for a minute or so. Wednesday started out sunny, then clouded up and talked real big but didn't rain here. Today was cloudy early then some scattered clouds here and there. Temperatures have been pleasant to just a bit cool at times during the day..in the 60's and 70's.  Night time lows have been hanging in there about 38 to 42 degrees

Still lots of fun spring stuff happening..The lilacs are pretty musc done..BUT the roses are coming along nicely..lots of buds..Lindsay saw the first open flower this morning..should be showing{and smelling} pretty well by next week. The poppys are starting to bud and one is starting to show color..won't be long before they get going!! The garlic is getting huge!! Della's bearded iris are really starting to bloom. I can see little baby fruit on the cherries, currants, and the apricot. Trees are leafing out all over..weeds are growing..

It has been a another busy week here on the farm. Have just a few more things to start in the prophouse this weekend..then we just have to get it all planted!!

The landscape is changing rapidly in the high tunnel..the favas are growing rapidly..found a couple of 3-4 inch beans when we put their next tie on..fava wall is now taller than Lindsay!! Filled in most of the space we made last harvest with sweet peppers..all shapes and colors!! Cucumbers, tomatoes, and sweet potatoes are lookin' good!! They all look so small right now, though, compared to all the greens that were there last month!!

 Thank you to all our interns, work share folks, volunteers, and all our young farmer friends for coming out to share in all our adventures..you are all awesome!!}

Happy May Day!!

seventh veggie pickup of the 2016 season will be this coming Saturday, 14. 9 am to noon!!!

Weather has been off and on the last 2 weeks..we had one Saturday pickup that was fairly pleasant..and the next where it rained most of the morning. During the week it has been about the same with the bulk of the rain this past week. It rained on Saturday..rained a bit more on Sunday and again on Monday..Tuesday the heavens opened up and dumped buckets down..along with just a bit of hail to get our hearts a pumpin'. Wednesday we were feeling happier..when I went out at 6 am it looked like the sun was going to come..by seven it was all overcast again. No rain but just cloudy, gloomy, chilly, and made us all down right cranky!! This morning when I went out at six..well I couldn't see a cloud in the sky!! AND it stayed that way all day!! AND it looks like we might be sunny and dry until Sunday!! Our highs have ranged anywhere from almost 80 when the sun was out to barely 50 when it was cloudy and rainy. Our lows have been above freezing to high 30's for the most part except for a 26 degree night 2 weeks ago this coming Saturday..

Still lots of fun spring stuff happening..The lilac have been spectacular..hopefully they will still be going strong by Saturday so that everyone has a chance to stop and smell the lilacs in sunny{we hope!!} weather!! The garlic is getting huge!! Della's bearded iris are just starting to bloom{the earliest ones} and most of the later ones are putting up buds. I can see little baby fruit on the cherries, currants, and the apricot. Trees are leafing out all over..weeds are growing..

It has been a busy two weeks here on the farm. We have transplanted collards, portuguese kale, other kales{several varieties we are trialing out in the field}, shallots, onions, and more onions, a few more asian greens, lettuces and more!! The kohlrabi we planted a few short weeks ago are starting to get little kohlrabis..the earliest cabbages are starting to head..the carrots, radishes, and turnips are coming up. The prophouse, honeyhouse, and hardening off bench are all full to overflowing. Have just a few more things to start in the prophouse this weekend..then we just have to get it all planted!!

The landscape is changing rapidly in the high tunnel..the favas are growing rapidly..and have little 1 inch beans set. Many of the early greens have made way for the cucmbers. We got them and  the tomatoes planted..Lord willing and the crick don't rise{and Mother Nature doesn't throw us any curve balls} we shoud start seeing a few of both in about 60 days!! This week many of our lettuces and salad greens will be making way for peppers and eggplant. We have gotten sweet potatoes and more tomats planted in the low tunnel..have just enough space{I hope} for seed crops..early jalapeno peppers and cinnamon basil.

Thank you to Gail and Traci for coming out to help weed the rhubarb..it is Very appreciative!! Thank you to all our interns, work share folks, volunteers, and all our young farmer friends for coming out to share in all our adventures..you are all awesome!!}

seventh veggie pickup is this coming Saturday May 14 th..7 down..30 weeks of the best fresh, local veggies in the valley left!! ..still have shares available..

Happy May Day!!

fifth veggie pickup of the 2016 season will be this coming Saturday, April 30. 9 am to noon!!!

Weather has been a bit unsettled this week..but drier than last. Quite a bit of wind..Saturday pickup was quite breezy{but sunny!!}..Later in the day.if it wasn't nailed down it is now someplace in Delta!! Sunday and Monday were just a bit breezy but nothing like Saturday!! Wind and rain off and on Tuesday, Wednesday and today. Our highs have ranged anywhere from about 50 when it was cloudy to 70's while the sun was out. Lows have been right around 30 all week. Forecast this next week is calling for more rain Sunday and Monday then lots of nice sunshine most the rest of the week. But..this is Colorado and it is still springtime in the Rockies..it is probably changing again right this minute!!!

Still lots of fun spring stuff happening..The currants are going nuts!!..their blooms are not very showy but they are so loaded I can see them from halfway across the field!! The plums, apples, pears, nanking cherry are all in full bloom!! spectacular!! The lilacs may not be as full open as I thought it would be by Saturday pickup..they are maybe about 1/3 open..but they are really starting to smell wonderful..please be sure to take a few moments on Saturday to stop and smell the lilacs!! AND we may actually have apricots this year!! I can see very small, very green  little cots forming!!

It was a very productive week!! Sunday we started out in the prophouse watering and pricking up the last of the celeriac and curly parsley and started nasturtiums to go in the squash patch. Then we wandered on outdoors and worked on finishing up the carrot bed and getting beds ready for onions. Monday we pricked up some more little transplants, watered the high tunnel and the pea patch{that wind Saturday just sucked all the moisture out!!} and got carrots, radishes, and turnips seeded. Wednesday we went into planting mode and planted collards, asian greens, lettuces, and more greens. We also got two more beds ready to plant this next week for kales, a few of the alliums, and who knows what at the end of the kale bed!! This morning we started out early{while it wasn't raining} and started to harvest rhubarb and green onions outdoors..{we started this morning because the weatherman said it was going to rain today and tomorrow.} It started to rain so we holed up in the high tunnel to tie up favas..but it quit fairly quickly so we headed back out to the field..by the time we were done harvesting the sky was clear and blue!!  It was getting warm in the high tunnel so we headed over to the prophouse to water everything and get plants ready for CSA pickup. Everything out in the field is looking great..{including the weeds!!} the peas are coming up nicely and everything we have transplanted so far is looking great!! The garlic patch is very happy!!

We were going to plant tomatoes in the high tunnel this week, but they just weren't quite big enough when I was looking at them on Sunday..they got over it..I think they doubled in size in just a few short days!! SOOO next week they are going in!! And maybe the first of the cucs..they are growing well but could use a few more days.. The favas are going nuts!! The wall is going up!! and they are blooming!! Most of the greens are growing rapidly..we are having a hard time keeping up with them!! Need to eat more greens!!

Thank you to all our interns, work share folks, volunteers, and all our young farmer friends for coming out to share in all our adventures..you are all awesome!!}

Happy Springtime in the Rockies!!

fourth veggie pickup of the 2016 season will be this coming Saturday, April 23. 9 am to noon!!!

Finally got some rain this week..lots of rain!! My nice gentle overnight shower started happening Friday afternoon..and didn't really go away until yesterday afternoon!! It rained pretty much all of Saturday and Sunday but lightened up to the occasional shower the rest of the week. Today was sunny and warm with just a few little wispy clouds here and there. High have ranged from about 45 on Friday to almost 70 today..lows have been about 28-38. Good news is we don't need to water the garlic..bad news is we didn't get those onions planted!! Looks like we may have the occasional rain over the weekend and into the week, but mostly pretty sunny.

More fun spring stuff happening this week..The currants are blooming. the nanking cherries are just budding, the plums are in full bloom, the pear and the crab apples are starting to bloom, apples are just budding..AND if we don't get any of those real cold mid 20 degree nights, by next weekend the lilacs should be just starting to bloom..for the first time in a good 5 or 6 years!!

Another busy week despite the rain!! Well all except Sunday..I curled up and took many long naps, did some reading, and worked a few crossword puzzles..it was wonderful!! Monday we got back into the swing of things..a good prophouse day..while I pricked up more plants and seeded tomatoes for the great outdoors, Lindsay watered and fertilized pretty much everything. Kicked brassica greens and lettuce out to harden off..and rearranged the honey house and the prophouse to make space for lots more warm season goodies!! Tuesday and Wednesday we mostly worked either in the high tunnel or the low tunnel..weeding, getting beds ready for sweet potatoes and tomats. Today we got to play in the sunshine!! We worked on getting the bed ready to seed carrots and weeded rhubarb. AND just enjoyed the sunshine!! {and admired our little kohlrabis and cabbages that we planted last week..they are lookin' great!!

The high tunnel is starting to get a few blank spaces..which is good..we have cucs and tomatos that are just about ready to transplant!! Lindsay and Brook worked on getting the first tie around the favas..I think they have grown at least another 6 inches since Tuesday!! Mom was able to get back to her weeding projects today..it was just too wet and cold for her early in the week even in the tunnel. And tomorrow we harvest again!!

Thank you to all our interns, work share folks, volunteers, and all our young farmer friends for coming out to share in all our adventures..you are all awesome!!}

Happy Springtime in the Rockies!!

third veggie pickup of the 2016 season will be this coming Saturday, April 16. 9 am to noon!!!

Another week of glorious spring weather. We got a little bit of rain..mostly on Saturday morning pickup day..not enough to make up for the wind though. We tried to mess with Murphy{you know that little guy who hangs out here on the farm thinking of ways to mess up my game plan!!} this week..started running the sprinkler so that it would rain..well it didn't work..so we are continuing doing the sprinkler thing until we can get the drip up and running..holding off on it another week so that we don't have to worry as much about the valves freezing. Most of the week has been very sunny..a bit breezy off and on..but warm and pretty comfortable. Highs in the 70's..lows in the high 30-low 40 range. Today looked like it was going to be sunny early, but then clouds started rolling in..right now it is trying to rain. Looks like our best chance at some rain is going to be tomorrow for harvest day and Saturday for veggie pickup!! Looks like it's going to be a hair cooler until Monday.

More fun spring stuff happening this week..The sand cherries have been in full bloom all week..willows are blooming..the plums are just starting to open well..the peas we planted last week are starting to sprout..the birds are singing and building nests..the leopard frogs are croaking loudly away.

Another busy week here on the farm. Sunday and Monday were  prophouse days..started cucs, okra, and malabar spinach for the high tunnel..started peppers, eggplant, marigolds, zinnias, and nasturtiums for outdoors..and pricked up some odds and ends that we didn't get to last week..a bit of basil, a bit of celery, a few random herbs. We were also working on finishing getting the frame for the low tunnel ready for plastic. Tuesday we put the plastic on the low tunnel{the main day we had wind this week!! Yesterday and today we went into planting mode..kohlrabi and early cabbages are all planted out in their beds in the field. They look so much smaller out there in the field than they did in the flats on the hardening off bench!!

The high tunnel is still lookin' good!! Mom has been working on weeding..they are growing almost as fast as the greens!! The favas are really starting to take off..looks like we will have to start tying them up this next week!! Low tunnel adventures went well..a bit exciting at first..as we were running the plastic the wind started blowing harder{imagine a 20 x 96 foot kite!!}..that darn Murphy was at it again!! As soon as we got the plastic on the end walls tacked down so that it wouldn't end up in Delta, the wind died down!! It's looking good..just have a few more things to do..put the doors back on and get the windows covered. Then we just need to get the beds ready for planting and it will be ready for sweet potato slips and some of those tomato plants growing in the prophouse!!

Thank you to all our interns, work share folks, volunteers, and all our young farmer friends for coming out to share in our low tunnel and planting adventures..you are all awesome!!}

Happy Springtime in the Rockies!!

second veggie pickup of the 2016 season will be this coming Saturday, April 9. 9 am to noon!!!

What a glorious week it has been!! Lots of nice warm sunshine..a few clouds here and there..but very comfortable even with the clouds. Saturday pickup started out downright cold..it was 20 degrees when we went to set up!! But the day warmed up nicely..it felt so good to just sit and soak up the sun after last week!! Most of the week we have been in the 60's during the day 30's at night..today we got up into the 70's. We sure are getting dry though..all those little snow flurries we had last week did not get ahead of the drying effect of the wind. I have my request in for a nice gentle overnight rain..but you know how that goes!! The forecast looks like we might get a bit of moisture off and on this next week.

More fun spring stuff happening this week..more of the spring bulbs are blooming..lilac buds are really swelling..the plums are blooming..so are the willows..the wild birds are building nest..lots of fun to watch!!

This has been a busy week here on the farm!! Sunday we got the rest of the trees pruned..still need to do some cleanup under the trees, but the main bulk of that job is done..whew!! Monday was a prop house day..Tuesday and Wednesday we worked on getting the pea patch finished and today we planted and watered them!! Next week we are on to planting early cabbages and kohlrabi and a bazzllion onions!! {I'm pretty sure I only started about 4500 seed way back in January, but i'm sure by the time we are through planting it will seem like at least a bazillion plants!!}

Monday we worked on rearranging the prophouse..kicked all those cabbages, kohlrabi and alliums out to the hardening off bench so they will be ready to plant next week. Then we moved celery, artichokes, and all sorts of greens for outdoors over into that space. As fast as Lindsey made space I was busy filling it back up..got lettuces, broccoli,cauliflower, and high tunnel peppers and eggplants all pricked up..it's magic..I can take 4 seed flats and turn them into about 15 trays!!

The high tunnel is still lookin' good!! Things are growing so fast in there..it doesn't even look like we harvested anything last week!!

Thank you to Gail and Traci for coming out for pea patch adventures!!  {as well as our interns, work share folks, volunteers, and all our young farmer friends..you are all awesome!!}
