Happy June!!

Note: eleventh veggie pickup of the 2015 season is tomorrow morning!!!  9:00am to noon!!!

Another note: If you have not made a payment since April..now is the time!!

Today is :Mom.s 90th birthday!!

Well, Saturday pickup was a wet one..rained pretty steady for most of the day..had a brief 15 minutes of sun just about the time Sally was here to pick up her veggies..it started raining again right after she left. It cleared off in the evening but rained a bit more over night. Sunday, Monday, Tuesday were fairly clear and sunny in the morning with some afternoon thunder showers. By Tuesday evening it was pouring again. Wednesday morning started out with a light shower just before 6..was cloudy, but pleasant until almost 10..then the heavens opened up and let loose again..cleared off some during the evening. Thursday morning was off and on sun..mostly off. By afternoon it was thundery..it was really rumbling for over an hour..then the heavens opened up and pured again. This morning started out cloudy, but no rain..the sun was able to peak out for a good bit of the morning. Looks like tomorrow could be sunny at least for the morning, but could have a chance of more afternoon showers. Sunday and on into the first part of the week looks like it might be much drier.

Outdoors..Getting more and more stuff planted despite the rain. When it's been too wet to plant we've been getting a lot of things weeded..the weeds are just loving all the rain!! Brocli and cauliflower are in..beds are ready for peppers, eggplant, summer squash, celeriac, and more artichokes. Fennel and carrots are up..didn't see any parsnips up yet. Peas are still blooming..the poppy is trying, but the rain is making a lot of the blooms fall over. Currants are starting to turn just the slightest bit pink.

Thank you Torie for joining us at the crack of dawn Wednesday morning!!

Note; we need your help!!!..workday Sunday, June 14th..we are starting in the high tunnel at 6 am and shifting to outdoors as it heats up..we will be out there until noon..so please come join us!!! If you can't make it Sunday we also need help Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday..anytime between 6 am and noonish!!

In the tunnels..Picked the first of the fava beans..have beds all ready to go for okra and malabar spinach. Cucumbers are starting to bloom..a couple of little girl blossoms to go with all the little boy ones..found the first tomato of the season this morning..a blush..it is about an inch long and looks like he will have many friends soon!! A few of the sweet peppers are starting to bloom. AND the swiss chard is going nuts!

Fun happening coming up tomorrow evening!! Our swiss chard, kale, and carrots will be a part of the meal!! There are still a few tickets left..not many though.

Happy May!!

Note: ninth veggie pickup of the 2015 season is tomorrow morning!!! May 30th 9:00am to noon!!!

Another note: If you have not made a payment since April..now is the time!!

The weather for Saturday pickup was awesome..nice and sunny!! A little shower in the evening. The rain for Sunday held off until afternoon then the heavens opened up and poured off and on through Monday evening. The rest of the week wasn't too bad..sunny mornings with afternoon and evening thunder showers..is our "monsoon" season way early this year or what?? Did have a bit of hail Wednesday afternoon..hail is when farmers hearts stop and we see thousands of little lives pass before our eyes!! only had about 3 minutes of pea sized hail..Della and I were holding our breath and thinking good thoughts for the lettuces and other little plants..both those that we had just planted and those that will be ready for harvest next week. A few holes in a few of the broader leaves, but we were lucky..very little damage even in the lettuces that we plan on harvesting next week!! The forecast for the coming week looks dry and warm..we may even reach 80 degrees!!

Outdoors..Got more stuff planted and more beds ready to plant. Planted a few more lettuces{found another tray hiding out..kinda thought there should be more but figured my math was just off!!} and most of the celery and a few more onions. Seeded a little patch of parsnips..new variety we are trialing{will be seeding our main crop soon}, bulb fennel and since I had just enough space left in the bed one variety of carrots..the one that is supposed to be purple all the way through. So I have a whole bed left for the rest of the carrots..2 varieties of our little sweet ones, a round one, and a mixture of orange, yellow, white, and purple ones.

Note; we need your help!!!..workday Sunday, May 31..we are starting in the high tunnel at 6 am and shifting to outdoors as it heats up..we will be out there until noon..so please come join us!!! If you can't make it Sunday we also need help Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday..anytime between 6 am and noonish!!

Roses are still looking spectacular!! The hail and rain knocked a few petals off but more buds have opened since. Sooo..this may be the last Saturday to stop and smell the roses on your way to pick up your veggies!! Enjoy!!

The prop house is emptying out fast!! We were able to move a bunch more stuff out to the hardening off bench so they will be ready to plant in the next couple weeks. Spent a bit of time this morning with the basil..we pinch the tops back so they will branch out and get bushy..heaven..just needed a tomato or two to go with it!! Bonus..the CSA will get fresh basil in their herb share tomorrow!

In the tunnels..harvested the last of the chinese cabbage, lettuces, and a nice chunk of turnips to make way for warm season delights!! Got most of the sweet peppers in..have one more chunk of turnips for next week so I can finish filling that space. Sunday we will be planting hot peppers and getting beds ready..we are starting at 6 so we can get done in there before it gets too hot!! {then we will head on outdoors for more planting adventures!!} Monday I got the last tie up on the favas..some are getting taller than I am..we will have favas soon..found a few pods that were a bit bigger than my finger..not filled out yet but coming soon!!

Thank you Gail for coming out to help with the peppers..instead of Patrick's perfect purple pepper we have Gail's gatherers gold!! It is a golden yellow frying pepper

Happy May!!

Note: eighth veggie pickup of the 2015 season is tomorrow morning!!! May 23rd 9:00am to noon!!!

Well, had another wet veggie pickup day Saturday..into the evening and overnight. Sunday the sun was out a good bit of the time with a light evening rain shower..Monday was a gorgeous day until the afternoon when we got yet another little bit of rain..Tuesday was one of those off and on days..cloudy early, then sunny, then rainy, then a bit more sun, then more rain..Wednesday was mostly sunny with another light rain in the evening..Thursday was mostly cloudy but just a bit of rain overnight..today sun and clouds off and on but no rain yet..tomorrow the forecast is calling for yet another rainy veggie pickup day. And looks like more of the same off and on next week!! Can't really complain about the rain..at least this week down in the valley we haven't gotten any of that white stuff!! We were comenting today that it seems like we had more nice warm sunny weather way back in January during the winter than we have had in May this year..maybe we just weren't playing with water so much back in January??

Outdoors..We made great strides this week getting things planted out..we got about 3/4 of the onions in..parsley, the last planting of lettuces..and got salad and beta greens, radishes and turnips seeded. And we worked on getting the beds ready for the artichokes, celery, and broccoli. Exciting things happening in the garden..kohlrabi are about the size of a large marble, cabbages are heading up, poppies are budding, yellow rose on the driveway should be about peak tomorrow..sooo stop and smell the roses on your way to pick up your veggies!!

Sunday turned into another prophouse day..even though the sun was shining it was just too wet to run out and plant anything...sooo got that last tray of fall brassicas pricked up, moved bunches of trays around so we could get everything off the heat mat and a bit more into the sun. AND thank to Bettye, the prophouse, honey house and pot storage have never been this organized in late May!! It's awesome..I have been enjoying having something organized!!

In addition to joining us for our workday on Sunday, Bettye also made a pot of Portuguese kale soup for us to try..it was yummy!! So Thank you Bettye for organizing and for feeding us!

In the tunnels..the landscape in the high tunnel is certainly changing..most of the early season greens have been harvested. So far we have cucs and eggplant in those spaces..and should have enough room now for the peppers!! The tomatoes are looking very good..some of them are starting to bloom. The favas..well I got lost back behind them this morning harvesting some blue mustard and kales..they are truly awesome right now..over 4 feet tall and trying to take over the whole space..AND they have little 1-1 1/2 inch beans set!!

Time to sign up for another season of awesome fresh veggies!! We need 50 members this season!! We have 30 members at this point. We will still be signing folks up until we are full!!

Please sign up and encourage friends, family, co-workers, etc to join us!! To sign up..just go to our website.. www.circleagarden.com  click on member signup and follow the directions.

Old little chickies are almost 12 weeks old now{this coming Wednesday}..They look like little ladies..so pretty!!

New duckies are 8 weeks old now..and are pretty much all feathered out..looking pretty good!! Della has been letting them out of the pen and letting them stay out a good bit of the day..they are getting much more adventuresome..and very attached to their bath tub.

Little Miss did it!! Now have 7 or 8 little goslings that are 1 week old. Very cute!! Very little!! and insist on leading all their "parents" astray!! They are still small enough to get through the fencing, so off they go to explore, "parents" get worried and knock the fence over to get to the babies and they all go adventuring. The other day they found the duckie bath tub on the back lawn..the duckies were NOT amused with the goslings playing in it!!

Happy May!!

Note: seventh veggie pickup of the 2015 season is tomorrow morning!!! May 16th 9:00am to noon!!!

Fork fest was awesome..once again Kat made our veggies shine!! She did pretty much the same dishes with a few exciting additions like asparagus and morel mushrooms that she and Stan picked from the wild..yum!! And Sarah Sharpe..another of our CSA members demonstrated how to make mayonnaise 6 different ways..same basic recipe..just using different herbs and spices to make each batch of mayo a different flavor..all were yummy especially with our spring roots!! Our thanks to both of these ladies for their enthusiasm and time to promote not only our farm, but our abundance of local foods grown in this valley.

The weather so far for the month of May has been wet!! I hear veggie pickup last weekend was miserable..when I  left for fork fest the sun was kind of thinking about coming out..barely..apparently it went downhill from there..rain, wind, more rain and then snow towards the end of pickup!! Me, I was in a nice warm building where I could look out the window and just watch it snow!! Sunday started out with a good shower but the sun was shining by about noon..Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday were partly sunny with just a few evening showers..Thursday was wet off and on..this morning..well it rained cats and dogs until about 9..quit AFTER we got the rhubarb harvested..please help us thank Terry and Tami for taking one for the team!! It has been mostly cloudy the rest of the day and we just got a lot more rain and a wee bit of hail!! AND it looks like tomorrow is going to be another wet one!! The forecast does look like it might clear out some on Sunday and give us some dryer sunny days through the week..until Saturday...

Outdoors..Everything we have gotten planted so far is doing well..really loving this cool wet weather!! We are having a hard time getting things planted out..the soil has just been too wet to work with so we are getting behind..We did get the potatoes in this week. and worked on getting some weeding done. This next week we will be working on getting the rest of the onions, celery, broccoli, cauliflower, and artichokes in..as well as try to seed salad greens, radishes, turnips, beets, and carrots..the space is all ready to go..just need to have the soil a bit dryer on a day we are not harvesting!! It has been pretty close to good by Thursday but we can't be two places at once!!

Sunday and Monday were good prophouse days!! Just about all the seeds we started last week are up and growing well. I have just one more tray of stuff to prick up!! Late brassicas to plant out in late June..hopefully I will have room to put them come Sunday..I have a bunch of trays of transplants for the CSA that I am hoping we will pull out tomorrow..tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, basil..all those tender babies!!{and then I am hoping that either the CSA will take them home or that the weather will stay warm enough so I don't have to stick them back indoors!!}

In the tunnels..the high tunnel just doesn't look as full as it did a few short weeks ago..but I think we may have room now to plant eggplant and a few of the peppers..

Time to sign up for another season of awesome fresh veggies!! We need 50 members this season!! We have 30 members at this point. We will still be signing folks up until we are full!!

Updates on our little birdie friends...

Have new little chickies that just hatched Saturday and Sunday..so they are just about 1 week old..these are the ones that mom and Della hatched in the incubator from our eggs..they could be very interesting birds!!

Old little chickies are almost 11 weeks old now{this coming Wednesday}..They look like little ladies..so pretty!!

New duckies are 7 weeks old now..and are pretty much all feathered out..looking pretty good!! Della has been letting them out of the pen and letting them stay out a good bit of the day..so far they are staying close to the pen, but are getting a bit more adventurous each day..they made it clear over to the high tunnel yesterday..

Little Miss did it!! She now has any number of little goslings..They started hatching yesterday morning..Della doesn't know just how many yet..Little Miss has pretty much kept them in the nest to keep them warm..hopefully she will bring them out to show off tomorrow..maybe if it is sunny.

Happy May Day!!

Note: sixth veggie pickup of the 2015 season is tomorrow morning!!! May 9th 9:00am to noon!!!

Our first veggie cooking demonstration went well. Kat whipped up some interesting and very tasty dishes using spring veggies. We tasted nettle soup, a swiss chard and mustard salad with spring roots and an amazing dressing, rhubarb lemonade, and nettle sorbet {sounded a bit weird but was yummy!!} A number of folks took advantage of the opportunity to learn more about how to use some of our more unusual veggies. We would liked to have had a few more folks participating and sharing some of their ideas but I think it went well for our first attempt. I need some feedback..is this something that you would like to see us continue?..would you be willing to share some of your ideas?..any other thoughts? Our next demo should be sometime in August featuring our peak season goodies. Many, many thanks to Kat and Stan for taking time out to do this for us!!!

Did you miss out on the demonstration here at the farm last Saturday? Come join us at Ouray Fork Fest tomorrow!! I will be there at the community center all day..Kat will be demonstrating what to do with some of our spring veggies at 2:00 pm..hope to see you there!! {there will be other chef demonstrations throughout the day as well}

The weather this week was a bit wet!! We had quite a few of those nice gentle rains off and on most of the week!! A couple practice sprinkles during the workday Sunday..then a nice shower later..Sunny Monday morning with afternoon and overnight showers..cloudy and rainy off and on all day and night Tuesday..the same for Wednesday with some sun and a light hail storm in the afternoon..off and on sun Thursday with some overnight rain..today started out with showers early, sun mid-morning, and now looks like more rain is coming in. I think everything except the tunnels got a much needed drink!! So far this next week looks to be mostly sunny with just slight chances of showers.

Outdoors..The peas are pretty much all up now..they got a lot of water..it hadn't rained enough by Monday morning to get them a good drink so I put the overhead sprinkler on them!!
And made it rain really well on Tuesday!! Was figuring I would have to run the sprinkler on everything else but Mother Nature took care of it!! On Sunday during our workday we got more onions in{1 bed down 3 to go!!} and lots more lettuce. Monday we planted more greens..portuguese kale, collards, kale, bok choi, and mustard and got beds ready for salad greens, radishes, turnips, beets, and carrots.

Our thanks to Terra, Nate, Sunny, Dorie, Terry, Billie, and our work share folks for helping us out this week!!

Tuesday and Wednesday turned into good prophouse days!! Fertilized and moved a ton of stuff out to harden off, got melons, squash, cucs, and tomatillos started and pricked up another batch of plants. I think I just have about 4 seeding trays left to prick up and I am done for a while!!

In the tunnels..tomatoes and cucs all look happy..some of the tomatoes already have buds opening..we are pretty sure we didn't see any when we planted them!! The favas are going wild!!..I think they have grown at least a foot{maybe more} since last week..they are about waist high now and blooming like crazy..if all those blossoms set we will have a lot of favas!!

Many of our spring greens in the tunnel have been harvested..this is the last week for yakina savoy, tokyo bekana, mizuna,. next week will be the last of the red rain and mibuna..have a few more weeks on the mustards, chinese cabbage, and bok choi. But the kale and chard are starting to go nuts!! We also have a few new greens that we are trialing that we are just starting to harvest..3 siberian type kales, biera tronchuda{potuguese kale}, texel greens, and one called liscia spigarrello {a broccoli green}. We have peppers, eggplant, okra and more just about ready to be transplanted into those bare spots!!

Time to sign up for another season of awesome fresh veggies!! We need 50 members this season!! We have 30 members this night before our second veggie pickup of the season. We will still be signing folks up until we are full!!

Happy May Day!!

Note: fifth veggie pickup of the 2015 season is tomorrow morning!!! May 2nd 9:00am to noon!!!

Fun event here on the farm..Saturday May 2..10:00 am..Come and visit with fellow CSA members Kat and Stan as they demonstrate yummy ways to prepare spring veggies..this is a good opportunity to find new ways to prepare some of the many spring veggies we grow here at Circle A..have a recipe or an idea of what to do with spring bounty in your CSA share? Let's put the community in community supported agriculture!!  Bring along a dish to share with everyone..This will hopefully be first of many such get togethers in years to come!! {we want to try 3 of these this season but need your help and participation to make them work!!}

this will be a bit of an introduction to the next fun event the following week!!

Ouray Fork Fest..May 8th and 9th!! On May 9th about 2 pm Kat will be doing a demonstration with a share of the harvest from Circle A Garden..many other chefs will be demonstrating yummy things to do with local foods through out the day as well. There are many other fun events scheduled during Fork Fest as well.

The weather for Saturday pickup was much more pleasant this week..a bit cloudy but warmer and no rain, snow or ice!! Our weekend storm started coming in around noon..the wind picked up and was downright cold, but the rain held off until we were pretty much all packed up. We had nice gentle rain showers all Saturday night and most of the day Sunday and into Sunday night. Monday the clouds cleared off and the sun came back. By Wednesday it was downright hot!! I had thought maybe I had spent way to much time in the tunnels during the morning, but I had still not cooled off when we did evening chores around eight!! Yesterday and today it was not quite so warm..very pleasant and sunny with a random happy cloud coming over to cover the sun. Looks like the next storm is going to hold off until Sunday afternoon..maybe a few random afternoon and evening showers tonight and tomorrow.

Outdoors..The peas are starting to pop up as well as some of the cover crop we got in. Cabbages, kohlrabi and onions are doing well. Rhubarb is starting to go nuts. Our new planting is very happy and growing well. Garlic is growing well, raspberries and blackberries are starting to leaf out, currants are blooming. This week we will be spending much more time getting early season stuff into the ground.

Sunday was an excellent prophouse day again..unfortunatly about the time I think I am caught up it is either time to start something else or prick something up. Most everything I started last week is up and growing well. I think I can see the light at the end of the tunnel on seed starting..I think I just have melons, squashes, outdoor cucs, and tomatillos left to start!! But I am checking my list to make sure I haven't forgotten anyone!!

In the tunnels..well, this was the week..we now have tomatoes and most of the cucs in{had to wail until we harvested the bok choi to get space for the last few cucs}  All are doing well. In years past I have tries to get at least the tomatoes planted around mid-April..the weather has been so changeable and turning cold about that time..and really stressing the plants.. the last few years that I decided to try waiting a couple weeks. So far I think it's working. They all look very happy..but then they have only been in the ground for about 4 days!!

Our thanks to Terry, Dave, Chris, and Alyssa for coming out to help this week!!

Time to sign up for another season of awesome fresh veggies!! We need 50 members this season!! We have 30 members this night before our second veggie pickup of the season. We will still be signing folks up until we are full!!

Both the chickies and duckies are sharing the pen under the apricot tree..

Little Miss is still hanging in..I think she is about 1/2 way there!! Coral is now definitely nesting..and Della thinks that 2 more geese are thinking seriously about setting.

Mom and Della also started an incubator of chicken eggs ..should be seeing things happening in another few weeks

Happy Springtime in the Rockies!!

Note: fourth veggie pickup of the 2015 season is tomorrow morning!!! April 25 th 9:00am to noon!!!

Fun event here on the farm..Saturday May 2..10:00 am..Come and visit with fellow CSA members Kat and Stan as they demonstrate yummy ways to prepare spring veggies..this is a good opportunity to find new ways to prepare some of the many spring veggies we grow here at Circle A..have a recipe or an idea of what to do with spring bounty in your CSA share? After a very wet and cold veggie pickup Saturday the week was much warmer and the sun shone a good bit of the time..but was one of those Colorado spring weather weeks..if we didn't like the weather we just waited..and it changed..sunny, cloudy, windy, rainy..but MUCH warmer and none of that white stuff!! Looks like we may have a wet veggie pickup tomorrow though and maybe pickup some moisture through Sunday..

Outdoors..got a good start on planting onions. Peas are not up yet but if we get a good rain in this weekend I expect they will be popping up!! Cabbages and kohlrabi weather the cold well..they are already sending out new leaves. Della is not sure just how much of the fruit was damaged last week..some of the trees have continued to bloom this week while others the blossoms all brown and dead looking. Amazingly enough the rhubarb pretty much came out of it's freeze well..last week the longer stems were frozen solid. Well, they thawed out and a few were a bit spongy up next to the leaf but otherwise were fine..a few were split badly..but we only had to cull less than 1/4 of what we picked.

Sunday and Monday turned into major prop house days..we were going to plant onions on Sunday, but the soil was way too wet. So we Kicked artichokes and lettuces out of the honey house to harden off. Pricked up basil, celeriac, hamburg parsley, and something else. Seeded flats of late kohlrabi, cabbage, cauliflower and brussel sprouts. seeded the rest of the outdoor tomatoes{and backups for our freind Laura}, Aunt Molly's ground cherry, malabar spinach, okra, and quite a few nasturtiums, cosmos, and other flowering plants for our beneficials. And it looks like Sunday will be an excellent prop house day..have more stuff that needs pricked up or seeded!!

In the high tunnel most of the first succession of greens have been harvested..just have a bit more mustard and bok choi left..so the dilemma is ..do I go ahead and plant cucs and tomats or do I want to wait one more week???

Our thanks to Terry, Elizabeth, and our workshare folks for coming out to help this week!!

New little chickies are almost 8 weeks old now{this coming Wednesday}..They have been thoroughly enjoying the great out of doors.

New duckies are 4 weeks old now..and going into that awkward teenage stage..starting to grow feathers..when you pick them up they feel like little hedgehogs under their fluff!! Their feet are also growing faster than they can learn to use the bigger and better size..they should NOT run until they figure it out!!

Both the chickies and duckies are sharing the pen under the apricot tree..

One goose is definitely setting now..Della is pretty sure she is Little Miss..I think it's 9 days down and something like 20 to go!! Coral also seems to be settling in to her nest..has lined it with down and is staying on it most of the time.

Mom and Della also started an incubator of chicken eggs last Saturday..should be seeing things happening in another 3 weeks or so.

Happy Springtime in the Rockies!!

Note: third veggie pickup of the 2015 season is tomorrow morning!!! April 18 th 9:00am to noon!!!

Not as much wind this week until Tuesday night..then it just really howled. Cooler much of the week..some nice sunshine with a few stray clouds early on..very cloudy with snow and rain yesterday and today..much colder..low Wednesday night was 25..our high today was about 42. Nice to have the moisture but we would still like those nice gentle overnight rains!!

Outdoor adventures really picked up early in the week. Peas are in..early kohlrabi and cabbages are transplanted AND we made great strides in putting the lower portion of the garden back together!! We had much help on Wednesday from Transition Lab, some of our work share folks and an amazing class of high school kids from Vermont. We had something like 17 folks here shoveling and moving soil..establishing beds and paths, filling in holes, and doing wonderous things to our "mess". Didn't quite get it all finished but it is starting to look like a garden again rather than a mud hole!! THANK YOU all so much for helping us out!!

Haven't had a chance to thoroughly assess any damage from the cold night Wednesday..Rhubarb was very frozen..as in the longer stems were solid. We didn't pick but a few pieces because those longer stems and leaves were protecting the younger shorter stems from the cold..hopefully it will be warmer again next week. There were many very sad looking blossoms on many of the apples, plums, and quinces this morning..it was a bit hard to tell just how much damage they may have gotten..the trees and branches were all covered in snow!! Very pretty, but probably wasn't too good for the fruit!!

Didn't get much of a chance to do a whole lot of prop house stuff this week..spent a little bit in there Sunday morning. Monday looks like it will be another marathon prop house day!!

The view in the high tunnel is starting to change..many of the greens in the first succession are coming out..a few more left to harvest next week..then that bed will be ready to replant..which is good 'cause the cucumbers are just about ready!! note: greens are not over yet..we still have 2 more successions to go!! Tomatoes will be going in soon as well..I held off on planting them this year..in past years I have aimed for getting them in about now..but the last couple of years April has turned so cold and nasty. So I will see if they are happier hanging out in the prop house for another week or two before I kick them out into the hard cruel world!!

Our thanks to Terry and our workshare folks for coming out to help this week!!

Time to sign up for another season of awesome fresh veggies!! We need 50 members this season!! We have 30 members this night before our second veggie pickup of the season. We will still be signing folks up until we are full!!

Updates on our little birdie friends...

New little chickies are almost 7 weeks old now{this coming Wednesday}..They have been thoroughly enjoying the great out of doors. Not sure they really enjoyed the snow either!!

New duckies are a little over 3 weeks old..growing like weeds!! They didn't get as much high tunnel time the last couple of days..it was just too darn cold for them..they are just barely starting to grow feathers so don't have much except fluff to insulate them.

One goose is definitely setting now..either Carrots or Little Miss..I think it's 2 days down and something like 26 to go!!

Fun happening we would like to get started here on the farm..a demonstration of how to use different veggies in the share. We are shooting for 3 Saturdays this season..early spring, peak season, and fall. Happy Springtime in the Rockies!!

Note: second veggie pickup of the 2015 season is tomorrow morning!!! April 11 th 9:00am to noon!!!

The weather warmed up over the weekend..some awesome spring sunshine. Then the winds started to pick up on Monday..still nice sunshine, but was not as enjoyable with all the dust blowing up. The wind settled down just a bit on Tuesday but was back with a vengance on Wednesday. If it wasn't nailed down it left the farm for parts unknown!! Temperature was much cooler again on Wednesday and Thursday..highs barely in the 50's..low 26 Wednesday night. Much warmer and barely a breeze today. No moisture for us this week..with the winds we are getting dry, dry, dry. Looks like next week will be pretty much the same..hopefully not as windy!! Really need a couple of those nice gentle overnight rains!!

Got a few things done outdoors early in the week..until all the wind. 3 trellisses are up..running the sprinkler on the pea patch so we can get them in on Monday. Many fruit trees were in full bloom..plums, early apples, pear, and crab apples..not sure how they fared Wednesday night..they may have gotten a bit frosted. Late apples and quinces are not open yet so they may be alright.

Spent the entire day Tuesday in the prophouse..fertilizing, watering, and moving trays..kicked a bunch more stuff out onto the hardening off bench..just in time for it to get cold Wed night!! After the wind died down Wed. evening we were able to pull the cover down..all those little plants made it through with flying colors!! Most everything I seede last week is up and growing...and I have a whole list of goodies that need to be started this next week..okra for the high tunnel, more lettuces, late cabbages, kohlrabi, brussel sprouts, all sorts of flowers for our beneficial insect borders, and more!! Looks like at least the basil will be ready to prick up as well.

Wednesday we spent most of the day in the high tunnel..just too darn windy to play outdoors!! Got those last 100 or so transplants in..did a lot weeding and took time to just watch things grow!! Things are sure growing differently this year than last..chard and kale were huge by now last year..this year they are taking their sweet time..growing well, but still small..same with the bok choi. The mustards and many of the asian green were slower last year..this year they are growing much more rapidly. We won't have as much orach this year..already through 2 succession of it..it is bolting already!! Favas are growing well, but I think we had already started staking them by this time last year..looks like this is the week though we need to start!! Beets and carrots are coming right along. Lettuces are just about ready to start harvesting..chines cabbage is growing rapidly.

Our thanks to Terry and our workshare folks for coming out to help this week!!

Time to sign up for another season of awesome fresh veggies!! We need 50 members this season!! We have 30 members this night before our second veggie pickup of the season. We will still be signing folks up until we are full!!

Our warm spring weather stayed around until Wednesday..then the winds started in{what ever happened to March winds!!!}..clouds rolled in off and on and the temps dropped just in time for harvesting and cleaning veggies!! Our low last night was 22..32 on Wed night..in the low 40's before that. Our high today was about 58..much chillier than the 70's we had earlier in the week!!

Outdoors things were in a holding pattern much of the week..spent more time getting ready for the CSA pickup..washing pans, washing tables, getting things put away from the winter, getting the shade cloth down over the veggie shed, and harvesting veggies. Earlier in the week we did get some more done on the trellises, but pea planting is still delayed..hopefully this next week?? We are in a waiting pattern on the apricots..not sure just how many we may have. Some of the plums may have gotten frozen last night. They early apples are budding up nicely and some are showing color..later apples and quinces are just starting to bud.

I keep thinking I am all caught up in the prop house..then things grow!! I was pretty sure on Monday that I had everything that was ready pricked up..today I have more peppers and eggplant, the broccoli, cauliflower, and lettuces are now ready. And I have something like 4 more seed flats germinated and growing rapidly{mostly basil and celeriac. I got more stuff seeded this week as well..peppers, eggplant, and some of the tomatoes for outdoors, cucumbers for the high tunnel, and a succession of greens for outdoors. Was going to kick some more stuff out of the honey house, but chickened out with the wind and cold.

In the high tunnel I managed to fit in another 350 or so little green plants..just have another 100 to go..they should all fit..just have to remember not to breath!! Soon the landscape will be starting change again..we are starting to harvest cool season goodies that will make way for all those warm season delights!!

Our thanks to our Jeff, Randy, Terry, Billie, Cerra, and Mikal for coming out to help this week!!

Updates on our little birdie friends...

New little chickies are almost 5 weeks old now{this coming Wednesday}..They have been thoroughly enjoying the great out of doors. OK so they didn't totally enjoy the wind..but neither did we!!

New duckies are a little over a week old..4 little khaki campbells. They seem awefully quiet and neat..could be the difference between 4 and 12? I've been calling them Eeny, Meeni, Minie, and Moe..Della is NOT amused!!

Fun happening we would like to get started here on the farm..a demonstration of how to use different veggies in the share. We are shooting for 3 Saturdays this season..early spring, peak season, and fall. If you have a favorite way to prepare your veggies that you wold like to share with everyone please let me know so we can get it all coordinated. Our THANKS to Kat and Stan for helping put this together!!

Workdays for April..every Sunday 9:00 am to noon.  Please let me know when you will be out!!  Can't come on Sunday? but have other days that work better for you?? Please talk to us about setting up and alternative time..Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday mornings work best for us.

NOTE: chickens are starting to lay more again..we are getting an abundance..also have goose and duck eggs..and goose eggs for setting..call 249-9725 to get some!!

What is available for the CSA?

This usually my best guess on Thursday evening..it can change as we get to harvesting.
